For some sturdy folk, going
fishing is a severe test of physi
cal endurance.
They jounce for miles over
back country roads, dusty or
muddy as the season may be.
And finally, after battling
through underbrush, poison oak
and nettles to the bank of the
stream, they cast a gray hackle
on the waters, and sometimes
catch a fish.
Then we have the lazy angler
who prefers to loaf along on a
unlit iaKe, listening to the
soothing putt-putt of his out
board motor, occasionally bath
ing his larynx with a swig of
beer so he'll be able to yell
jrisn on!" when something
takes after the assortment of
shiny hardware and the win-
gling nightcrawler he's towing
astern.
And one of the best places for
nim to enjoy his favorite sport
is me laice-stuaaea central coast
line of Oregon.
The vacation angler can take
the whole family and live like
a maharajah without spending
too mucn money, either at any
of the dozens of resorts spotted
along the lakes and bays lining
highway 101 from Florence to
Coos Bay. He'll be only a few
paces from waters which will
yield good catches of fish all
the year around.
A pleasant assignment from
The Oregonian and the Oregon
State Motor association was to
take the white motorlog car and
go see now the fish were biting
in the heart of the state's warm
water fishing area.
A partner on this expedition
was my chief confidante - and
critic, who answers to the name
of Connie and isn't afraid to put
her own worm on the hook.
From Portland to Coos Bay
was an easy half day's drive
along a highway lined for the
last 75 miles with solid masses
of pink rhododendron blooms
and yellow Scotch broom.
Coos Bay is the striped bass
fishing capital of Oregon. This
statement will be received with
proper reverence by anglers
who have hooked these finny
monsters on sports tackle.
Striped bass abound in the
bay and its many inlets. They
range in size from 2 to 60
pounds.
The season's open the year
round, but fishing is best from
May through November. In the
spring, stripers are caught on
hooks baited with hunks of
frozen pilchard, but later on
they will hit a trolled spoon or
a feathered jig.
The chamber of commerce
brochure says an angler can get
"a real thrill" if he ties on to a
striped bass with a fly rod. But
we noticed the old-timers fish
ing on the Coos river were using
husky salmon outfits. A big
bas is strong and mean, and a
fisherman who hooks one is ad
vised to dig in his heels, clamp
down on his star drag reel and
hold on for all he's worth.
This year's striped bass derby.
the first, started May 4 and
runs through September 6, with
weekly prizes for the biggest
bass and a grand prize of an
outboard motor, boat and trailer
for the granddaddy striper of
1852.
Coos Bay also is noted for its
sports fishing for salmon and
tuna. Charter boats are avail
able to take fishing parties to
the best spots in the bay and in-

wood's dock at Lakeside, hooked
on the outboard motor we car
ried in the trunk of the motor
log car, and had been in tbe
water only a few minutes before
we hooked a couple of trout,
one a fat 14 inches.
Connie also caught a catfish,
but his ugly face was too much
for her, and back into the lake
he went.
Yellow perch and catfish are
plentiful in all these lakes. They
grow to impressive size, bite
readily on fishworms and, best
of all, there is no limit and no
closed season. Many fishermen
declare the meat of a catfish is
superior to any other game fish.
Slim and Edna Skauge, who
operate the popular cottages at
Currier's Village on Ten-Milp
lake, told us the lake has good
runs of silverside salmon, steel-
neaa ana sea-run cutthroat trout
in the fall months.
Farther north between Reeds-
port and Florence we came to
rahKenitch, Siltcoos and Woa
hink lakes, also famed for their
black bass, perch and catfish in
the summer, and trout in the
spring and fall when the water
is cooler.
At Siltcoos lake we trolled un
and down the narrow, tree-
shaded outlet with our plugs
and baited spinners, caught a
few perch and trout, and then
went into the lake proper for an
unsuccessful effort to lure the
black bass out of their lilv-nad
lairs along the banks.
There are lots of them in
there, though, and dIuk casters
have a lot of sport in Siltcoos.
There's a bass derby there, too,
with all the Droceeds coin? tn
fight the weeds that have begun
to cnoKe these southerly lakes
and plague spinner fishermen.
You don't need a biz bank
roll to enjoy a lakeside fishing
vacation, we discovered. Really
comfortable cottages rent for 55
and $S a night, boats are avail
able everywhere for $2 a day,
and nightcrawlers come at 25
cents a dozen if you're too lazy
to dig your own.
All you need to bring is your
fishing gear and a small out
board motor.
The latter is almost a must.
for these lakes are big, and the
best angling spots naturally are
far from the moorages. Ten
Mile lake, for instance, has a
whooping 178 miles of shoreline
and is said to be the biggest lake
