talks about calcium, and I hope
readers appreciate how care
fully I have

Getting right
down to business, I assert, with
out fear of contradiction, that
such impressive names as chronic
arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis,
arthritis deformans, atrophic
arthritis, degenerative arthritis,
osteoarthritis and hypertrophic
arthritis are $50 words for $1.80
rheumatism.
To that I must add, for. the
benefit of the watch out, Brady,
the probation term has four days
yet to go! then for the benefit
of rheumatiz sufferers who may
have bought one or more of these
fancy titles, they don't mean any
thing more than that there is ap
parently something the matter
with the patient's joints.
Arthritis, derived from arthro,
joint, and itis, inflammation,
means joint inflammation and
that's all.
Rheumatiz, derived from,
heck, the derivation of rheuma
tism goes back to catarrh and
other absurdities, so we may as
well settle for stiffness of joints
with pain on motion.
I have a well defined view or
concept of the pathology of the
rheumatiz but, believe it or not,
sympathy for sufferers con
strains me to withhold my view
I'd rather let you have it in
easy installments.
I have been taking treatment
for my rheumatiz for about a
year and with highly satisfactory
results. The second joint of mid
del finger began to crackle a bit,
r-became somewhat tender and

stiff compared with opposite
middle finger (I do not use it
much, beine a two finger typist)
and swollen to spindle shape. So
I added to my daily ration oi j
vitamins and minerals an extra j
The swelling and stiffness stead
ily diminished and now there s
little more than the memory.
Aside from injuries, strains or
acute infections, the rheumatiz
is a manifestation of nutritional
deficiency, I believe. Especially,
but not entirely, calcium and D
deficiency.
Mind you, fa please keep
in mind that it is hardly possible
to correct nutritional deficiency
by taking vitamins or minerals
or anything else for a few weeks
or months as you might take
medicine. If you have the no
tion to "try'.' something in that
way, my advice is: Don't.
I wish everv one who has or
is training for the rheumatiz
could read Nutrition and Physi
cal Degeneration, by the late
great Weston A. Price, M.S.,
D.D.S.. F-A.C.D. Not that Dr.
Price says anything about the
rheumatiz, but he makes clear
the meaning of physical degen
eration. The book may be avail
able in the public library. Just
looking at the pictures in it is
an education.

certify Local 6-12, International
Woodworkers of America, CIO,
as their bargaining representa
tive, it was reported last week.
Elwood Strumpf, Portland, a
representative- of the National
Labor Relations board, announc
ed that employees had voted 63
to 28 against the union.
The company was one of sev
eral Klamath Falls lumber firms
which was struck by CIO Wood
workers this spring, but a ma
jority of the employees went
after a few days.
Portland (U.R) The coroner's
office said Saturday a pitchfork
wound m the eve caused the
death of Raymond Mattingly,
12. of Warren. Ore., a few hours
after the accident Thursday. The
youngster was stabbed by a
prong of the fork while at play
with friends near his home.
The Grange
Shady Cove HEC
: The Shady Cove Grange HEC
met Tuesday at the home of
Mrs. Pat Close. Sixteen mem
bers attended.
An illustrated talk on the In
dian tribes of Oregon was pre
sented by Mrs. John Holtz, Butte
Falls. Two guests, Mrs. Hard
ing and Mrs. Hume of Upper
Rogue, attended.
Mrs. Alvina Flowers, in charge
of the fancy work, passed out
materials for aprons and tea
towels to be made for the bazaar
this fall. A friendship tablecloth
was suggested and the members
voted to make one.
The next Grange meeting will
be held July 9. The lecture hour
will be presented then by vis
itors from Butte Falls. Members
are asked to bring cookies or
sandwiches.
Eagle Point Grange
Piano and violin music and a
comedy skit were features of the
Eagle .Point Grange meeting
Tuesday.
Georgia Weidman, Colleen Ar
thur and Harriet Chamberlain
all entertained at the piano. A
violin solo was played by George
Cowden. Performers in the skit,
"Diet Starts Tomorrow," were
Clara Chamberlain, Marie Clark,
Kay Kettlewell, . Winnie Brown
and Rosa Smith,

program at the next meeting,
July 15, will be on the civil de
fense program. The lecturer's
hour precedes the regular meet
ing and is open to the public.
A square dance was scheduled
for 8:30 Saturday by the ways
and means committee. The ladies
are asked to bring sandwiches.
Mr. and Mrs. Grant Hubbell,
delegates to the state Grange
convention, rnd Goldie Cham
berlain, who accompanied them,
reported on their trip.
.The Lantis and Wilson shoe
store, 2 North Central avenue,
is under new ownership and
will be operated under the name
Johnston and Stewart starting
this week.
The new owners are Earl
Johnston, who was formerly
associated with the store for
many years, and Iral Stewart,
Portland, a shoe representative
who travels this territory. Store
personnel will include Johnston,
Robert Stewart, of Oakland, the
son of one of the co-owners, and
Tom Gifford, who has worked
at the store since its institution.
Robert Stewart announced
the store would continue to
carrv aualitv footwear and that
many new lines, including Ed
wards shoes for children, will
be added.
J. C. Penney Employee
Promoted, Transferred
Donald Ammundson, who has
been section manager in charge
of men's clothing and women's
accessories at the J. C. Penney
store here, and who has been
vith the store for six years, has
been promoted and transferred
to the E.igene Penney store, it
was announced this week.
