Billy is the newsboy for The
Mail Tribune at Camp White,
But he is not just an ordinary
newsboy. Some newsboys are a
little careless about where the
paper lands when it is tossed up,
And they are sometimes noisy
and rowdy. Billy isn't just the
quiet type. He can let himself
be heard when need be. "All
about Camp White" can be
heard above the conversation at
his place of business in the eve
nings and on Sunday morning
outside the mess hall.
This story about Billy tells of
an embarrassing moment when
he had to show how well he
could handle a situation. And it
is possible that he may become
a great executive someday just
on the strength of it. The new
bus operator didn't pick up the
papers the other evening and so
Pop Andrews had to phone in to
the Tribune circulation depart
ment. They said the paper
would be along by special deliv
ery truck within an hour.
But this fact was not general
ly known to the members and
they began to call "Where's the
newsboy?" "Where's Billy?"
Billy was at the front entrance
with his little red wagon, empty,
holding back the impatient cus
tomers who waited while he ex
plained like a little diplomat,
calmly and with assurances that
the papers would arrive within
an hour and they did. .
Joe Williamson, Oregon state
champion, Russell Howard, who
won third place at the Albany
meet June 14-15, and Murph
Petty, all members of Rogue
Archers, Medford, drove out to
Camp White to delight a select
audience with demonstrations of
skill with bow and arrows, Mon
day afternoon. They expect to
be out again this summer.
Now that the wet weather has
slackened, Walter Odegard is
back in his garden working the
soil and trimming his 800 plants
which he has raised from seed.
Everyone in Camp White stops
at times to admire Odegard's
garden of old fashioned flowers
zinnias, marigolds, nastur
tiums, carnations, and many
others.
Between the Administration
building and Company A where
he is domiciled, the bright color
attracts instant attention of
visitors.
Odegard has been working on
this garden three years. He has
discarded the wheel chair for a
cane. But the ground was culti
vated and fertilized in the be
ginning from the wheel chair.
Humming birds frequent the
area to dip honey which Walter
places on the flowers and the
pollenation process is enhanced.
He will show any interested
party a number of other unusual
features, one of wrhich is a hy
brid variety with red and yellow
marigolds growing from the
same plant.
Marvin Kahn, chief of special
services, Mrs. Kahn, and the
three children will head north
next week on leave for 2V2
weeks. Their first stop will be
Astoria where they will attend
the four day state encampment
of the V.F.W. Then they will go
on to British Columbia to fin
ish their vacation.

During the summer the pro

past year the effort was confin

of buildings occupied by the
members. Some new interior
work is included in the painting
project.
In addition. Engineer Sims
has scheduled continued land

items of construction, he declar

Forest Research
Milestone Reached
In Fir Contract
Corvallis A milestone in
the research program of the Ore
gon forest products laboratory
was reached recently when Gov.
Douglas McKay penned his name
to .an agreement between the
state board of forestry and the
M. W. Kellogg company, Jersey
City, N. J.
The eastern company won an
option contract , covering the
Kurth bark extraction process
developed by Dr. E. F. Kurth,
chemist at the laboratory, which
is located on the Oregon State
college campus.
This process -permits the re
covery of three commercially
valuable chemicals wax, di
hydroquercetin, and tannin
from Douglas fir bark which
usually is left to litter Oregon's
forests.
First Such Licens
According to Paul M. Dunn,
OSC dean of forestry and labor
atory director, this will be the
first time that a license has been
issued to practice under an Ore
gon state-owned patent. A simi
lar deal will be offered the Ca
nadian Forest Products, Ltd.,
Vancouver, B. C, for Canadian
rights.
Summarized, the option agree
ment covers an 8-month investi
gative period, and may be fol
lowed by an 18-month pilot plant
stage, and then an exclusive
production contract for a 5-year
period.
The agreement provides for
an initial payment of $2,000
within 15 days after signing of
the contract. During the 8-month
investigative period, the com
pany will make market and
quality studies.
All factors being equal, the
Kellogg company' agreed to use
raw materials from Oregon and
to locate the commercial plants,
if and when built, in Oregon,
Dean Dunn added.
Wax from Douglas-fir bark
has been found by the national
bureau of standards to be of high
quality and potentially competi
tive in the commercial markets.
Tannin is mainly used for leath
er tanning and for controlling
the fluidity of oil-well drilling
muds.
Dihydroquercetin, a white,
crystalline organic compound,
can be put to use fighting dis
ease and preserving food. As an
anti-oxidant, dihydroquercetin
is capable of preventing rancid
ity in fats and oils such as lard
and butter. It also is beneficial
in the treatment of frostbite and
fragility of blood capillaries.
