GIRLS MUST CHOOSE
BETWEEN MOTHER
AND STEPMOTHER
Divorce brings a problem for
children that is often more diffi
cult than that faced by their par
ents. In this situation loyalty,
honor, and decency enter the pic
ture. Here is a case where all
three seem to be lacking:
"I have been divorced for
Iwo years and have our three
daughters living with me.
Four years aso I received a
hock when I was informed
that my husband, whom I wor
shipped, was going with an
other woman. I pleaded in
' vain with both of lhem. They
were married right after the
divorce. My daughters tell me
Ihey love me yet behind my
back they get together and
have fun at my ex-husband
and his wife's home. They buy
(rifts for the woman who made
ny life miserable and even
carets her. Am I asking too
much of my daughters when I
ask them not to see her or
caress her?"
I'm surprised you even have
to ask your daughters not to see
the woman who broke up your
Ik'l'J KSZTSl nome. Their
W standards
snoum Keep
them from hav
ing anything to
do with her.
In the case
of their father
it is expected
that they
would retain
some of their
love because of
the happy years you all spent to
gether. And it is logical they
should want to see him from
time to time.
But it is callous to accept this
new wife of your ex-husband as
their mother and to treat her as
a mother. Has their father tried
to persuade them he did the
right thing .when he divorced
you or has she tried to win them
away from you as she did your
husband?
Not only for your own pride
but to' teach your daughters
some principles, lay down the
law about their future behavior.
Tell them that so long as they
live with you they may not go
to visit their father while his
wife is there. If they prefer her
to you, let them live with their
father and his new wife. They
cannot love and respect two
mothers simultaneously when a
divorce is involved.
