Tulare, Calif. (U.R) Bob
Mathias, defending Olympic de
cathlon champion, faced com
petition from his young brother,
Jim, in the National AAU de
cathlon meet opening today.
" As 28 top all-around athletes
from the country started their
battle for a place on the U. S.
Olympic team, it became evident
that the man to beat for the
national crown would be the
elder (aged 21) Mathias. How
ever, three places are available
on the U. S. team.
The youthful Jim Mathias,
aged 17, like his brother is an
all-around athlete, although he
has not achieved the legendary
marks posted by Bob at that
age. Bob was 17 when he won
the Olympic crown in London
in 1948.
Other entrants include James
Sturdevant, Detroit; Don White,

New York state's borders in an
army of more than 400 trucks
and trains.
The "gold rush," destined for
grocery stores began at 12 mid
night when the state's 66 - year
ban on the sale of colored mar

An estimated 150 huge trail

Wheat Support Price
Will Average $2.20
Washington (U.R) The Agri
cultural Department, announc
ing that it will support the 1952
vheat crop at a national average
of $2.20 a bushel, predicted
Tuesday that farmers will put
a record amount of this year's
bumper crop under government
loan.
The loan level is pegged at 90
per cent of the July 1 wheat par
ity price of $2.45 a bushel. It is
designed to give farmers a
"fair" return. This year's sup
port price is two cents higher
than last year's figure of $2.18
a bushel.
This year's hear -record wheat
crop is flooding Medwest term
inals, depressing prices and
causing the department to urge
farmers to take advantage of
price support.

Lending credence to the lat

"Where there's smoke there's

Gehringer, quickly and em
phatically pointed out that he
knew "nothing at all" about the
latest report that Rolfe and
Coach Dick Bartell will be given
walking papers, however.
"If there is to be any an
nouncement and I don't know
that there will be it will prob

Gehringer said. He meant from

night in the kickoff of the best

Holding down fourth position,
Los Angeles gets a crack at the

while Seattle hopes to improve

but the allocations will be di
rectly to counties.
Allocation of the $1,460,000
direct to the counties requires
that those counties produce
$975,000 of matching funds. The
federal sum amounts to one-half
the federal-aid funds 'allocated
to Oregon's secondary system.
County matching funds plus
the federal-aid means Oregon
counties will have $2,435,000 to
spend on county roads.
A committee representing the
association of Oregon county of

a formula for equitable distribu
