Brides, Babies and Bibles ...
The men of vision who own
forest land with young tree crops
see prime markets for the fu
ture among the 3,900,000 babies
that were born in this country
last year. The census experts,
who had predicted 3,500,000
babies for 1951, are now opti
mists who suggest a possible in
crease in the population of as
much as 28,000,000 for the pe
riod 1950-1960. They say we may
ven have 180,000,000 people by
1960.
More timber! More wood for
more honeymoon cottages, and
for cribs, scooters, schools
churches, more lumber, plywood
and shingles for buildings on
the new farms, more woodpulp
for the extra newspapers and
comic books that all the new
generation will require; :
And in this picture there's a
feature, that perhaps contains the
greatest significance of all. The
various versions of the Bible
show an ascending curve of sales
and use since 1926, with a steep
and steady climb for the last
15 years. Current example is
the Revised Standard Version
of the Bible, in preparation since
1930 by 32 renowned scholars,
which will be published on Sep
tember 30. A million copies are
row being printed. The job is
taking 1,400 tons of paper at
$440 a ton.
Forest Bibles ...
I expect that "significance"
Is no word for an old logger to
ling. I'd shy away from the
Bible as a topic, too, except that
I've never yet read anything
Bbout the power the forest tree
has exerted in the circulation
of the book of books. This has
grown into untold millions of
copies in the century since Hugh
Burgess invented the soda pro
cess of pulping wood and C. B.
Tilgham discovered the sulphite
method of stewing trees, to make
printing a mass production in
dustry. Right at home on a rough
plank shelf in my boom-pond
shack is a King James Version
of the Bible that I bought in
1931 for a dollar. Its page is
5x7 inches, and there are 1808
of them. The type is easy for
even my lone weak eye to read.
The cover is limp plastic com
position. The gilt title has long
since faded away. The cover's
corners are about gone. It has
pencil marxs all the way
through. A sample:
"The glory of Lebanon shall
come unto thee, the fir tree, the
pine tree, and the box together,
to beautify the place of my
sanctuary ..."
And now the pine and the fir
come together to make millions
of Bibles each year that poor
people the world around are able
to buy. Through the power of
the tree, released by science and
Industry, this treasure of faith,
hope, poetry and wisdom is made
all but free to every one.
It is a common delusion that
we are becoming less religious
as time goes by in these states
However, history records that
only one Colonial American in
20 belonged to a church in 1776,
while the census shows that near
ly 59 per cent of the population
has church ties today. Increase
in church membership has been
double the population increase
since 1926. Advance orders for
the new Revised Standard Ver
sion of the Bible already total
600.000 copies from the initial
edition of 1,000.000 copies.
The ruling theme of the new
translation is, "The word of life
in living language." It was "au
thorized" and will be brought
into use by 40 Protestant de
nominations. It may or may not
become the Bible of the babies
today. But certainly it will forti
fy the future of religion in Amer
ica, which is greater than you
think.
Harriman Lashes
At Sen. McCarthy
West Point, N. Y. (U.R)
Democratic presidential aspir
ant Averell Harriman lashed out
at Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy
Monday night.
In a nationwide radio address
from a Democratic dinner here,
Harriman accused the Wisconsin
Republican of introducing the
un-American concept of "guilt
by smear, rumor and associa
tion" into the American way of
life. He said Sen. Robert A. Taft
of Ohio, candidate for the Re
publican nomination for presi
dent, must share McCarthy's
guilt because he supported Mc
Carthy on many issues.
Harriman also attacked the
candidacy of Gen. Dwight D.
Eisenhower, saying the former
NATO commander would be a
"prisoner of Old Guard Repub
licans" if he were elected.

Aline Mosby signed to an
exclusive contract by 20th Cen

Jimmy, the doll, is an animat
ed toy clown that does stunts
on a trapeze, and all concerned
claim this is the first time a doll
crashed the movies in Holly
wood history.
He was signed as one of the
stars of "Top Man," and the new
thespian upstages Joanne Dru,
Richard Widmark and other hu
man actors. Jimmy the toy gets
close-ups, the opening scene and
even feature billing," . . . intro
ducing Jimmy the Clown."
The doll's agent is the man
who made him, Harold Gelber,
better known as the owner of a
swank movie colony restaurant,
Fox and Hounds. .
"The studio needed a doll to
figure prominently in the plot of
the picture and to be seen with
a child actor, Georgie Winslow,"
Gelber explains.
"They'd heard about my doll
because all the movie people
who come to the restaurant see
it. I keep it on a table and

was feted at the usual cocktail
party, another milestone in this
land of toothpicks and olives.
He was given a salary of S200

Gelber is" so pleased with his
