STATE'S
Plant's Efficiency
increases 600 Pci.
Following Revision
Average Daily Total
About 44,000 Gallons
Gold Hill The revised sew
age plant at Gold Hill which
has been in operation since May
is described by Councilman Mil
ton Steinmetz as being as "good
as any plant in the state."
He based his statement on ef
ficiency tests which show that
th tntsl nlant efficiency has in
caH finn tier cent since it
was revised to meet with state
standards.
The cost of the improvements
will be about $o,uuu, according
o Fprrf Jones, city recorder,
when a new set of distributing
arms over the gravel filtering
tank is installed in August,
which will complete the sched
tiled improvements.
A little work was done on the
imnrnvempnts in December with
the major work being completed
from January to May, Jones
exnlained. The new additions
rpf nictures) include a grit
chamber and comminutor trough
into which the sewage first pass-

ber; and in a final system of
weirs in the secondary settling
basin before entry into Rogue
river.
The weir which are scientif
ically designed to allow only a
thin film of water to pass over
the edges into a trough leading
to the doseing chamber for one
set and into the river on the
other, are the key to the plant's
efficiency, according to Stein
metz. He said that the actual
weir area of the main system
between the doseing chamber
and settling basin has been in
creased 384 per cent, while the
increase of toe other weir area
is 216 per cent. This increase
of water passage in a thin film
allows more material to settle
making the filtering process
more accurate, according to the
councilman.
The average daily gallonage
is about 44,000 gallons, accord
ing to the new flow meter.
The process of purification
begins with entrance from the
main into the grit chamber and
comunitor trough, the latter to
house a grinding unit at a later
date. The flow is then directed
through a Kennison nozzzle
where the amount of sewage is
measured by a flow meter.
The next unit is the settling
basin where the solids are taken
M : a j : : : a I-: i
breaks them up by chemical ac
tion and returns the liquid to
the settling chamber and excess
residue into an open sludge bed
for removal every 90 days. The
liquid from the settling chamber
is passed over into the doseing
chamber after it has gone
through the weir process. From
there, the liquid is sprinkled
over a large gravel filtering
tank, six-feet deep by means of
a rotating set of arms.
After the liquid is sifted
through the gravel tank, it pass
es off into the secondary set
tling basin via weirs and thence
to the Rogue river.

Salem (U.R) The state of
Oregon collected $63,970,602.08
in the first 11 months of the fis
cal year which ends June 30,
State Tax Commission Chair
man Ray Smith said Friday.
NEW INSTALLATIONS Shown above are
part of the new installations of the improved
Gold Hill sewage system. Pictured right fore
ground are the grit chamber (first section) and
comminutor trough (grating) which is made to
house a grinding unit not yet purchased. Just
beyond the end of the comminutor trough is
the installation for thfe Kennison nozzle (not
visible) which the flow meter is connected with.
The meter is housed inside the structure on
the left, which Includes a cement-lined base
ment for holding meter parts and pipe con
nections. Beyond the structure are the old
settling basin, doseing chambers, and gravel
filtering tank. At the far right is the top of
the old digesting chamber where the solids are
broken up by chemical action with the remain
ing residue passed out into a sludge bed and
liquid returned to settling chamber where it
is originally drawn from.

FINAL PROCESS Pictured above are the
last two processes of the Gold Hill sewage
plant. The concrete tank wall in the center
of the picture is part of a six-foot deep gravel
filtering tank which empties into the secondary
basin in the foreground, the last settling basin
before entry into the Rogue River. Only liquid
is handled in these two units with a sprinkling
device from rotating arms entering the tank
from above. Pictured upper left is the house
containing the flow meter to record the gal
lonage passing through the plant, while the
structure at upper right is the chlorination
house which is used to purify the water before
entry into Rogue River.
EFFICIENCY FACTOR Shown above Is the main set of weirs
in the Gold Hill sewage plant which have an increased efficiency
area over the old ones of 384 per cent. They are located between
the settling chamber and doseing unit and are so designed that
only a very thin film of water passes over their edges on both
sides of the trough keeping the maximum amount possible of sedi
ment from passing into the next process. The weirs work on hy
draulic principles and control the amount of water passing over
their edges.

Strange Names Used
For Clipper Vessels
Boston (UP) Owners of the
famed clipper ships of a century
ago reached to strange places for
names for their vessels, accord
ing to information compiled by
the State Street Trust Co.
A booklet on the subject
shows that some ship owners fa

sea such as Ocean Eagle, Sea
Nymph, Flying Scud, Sea Witch
and Dashing Wave.
Others picked fictional or
mythological characters such as
Hamlet, Orpheus and Galatea
Still others favored American

LAST PROCESS Above is the secondary settling basin of the
sewage plant at Gold Hill, the last process before entry of the
purified liquid into Rogue River. The water enters the round foam
bin at left center and the weirs (metal troughs on chamber's side)
allow only a thin film of water to flow over their edges. These
weirs are new and have an increased area over the old set of 216
per cent.
Requests Shipping
Seattle (U.R) Alaska Gov.
Ernest Gruening called on Pres
ident Truman Saturday asking
that civilian cargoes be sent
north aboard military ships.
Governor Gruening arrived in
Seattle from Alaska Friday on
his way to the Governor's Con
ference in Houston. Texas. He
said he is worried over Alaska's
plight as a result of the shipping
strike and said he is puzzled
as to why it has not been set
tled. In a telegram to presidential
assistant John R. Steelman,
Gruening said his action in ask
ing for military vessels to trans
port cargo is "clearly indicated
in the national interest, for Al
aska's economy and to prevent
further suffering."
Gruening said the shipping
shutdown coming at the height
of Alaska's short construction
season has interrupted defense
time schedules.

The body of Rabbi Samuel B.
London, 23. was found on a park
path in the Greenpoint section
of Brooklyn Friday. An autopsy
disclosed he died of a single .22
gunshot wound in the head.
The police were hunting for
a sniper or the owner of a .22
rifle who may have been target
shooting and accidently killed
the young man. They ruled out
robbery as a motive because
London's wristwatch and wal
let were untouched.
