Mobilization Program to
Relieve Distressed Areas
Philadelphia 0J.R) The re
gional defense mobilization com
mittee has launched a national
industrial mobilization program
designed to relieve distressed
areas and dig out of hiding un
used machinery and manpower
for defense.
Based on a so-far successful
laboratory test in the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre
area, the program
already has been ordered ap
plied to more than 30 areas
throughout ' the country and is
designed to go into additional
communities as fast as' possible.
Although exact figures are not
and probably never will be
available, the Scranton chamber
of commerce estimated the pro
gram has contributed to a boom
ing $250,000,000 worth of gov
ernment spending in the area.
About 9,000 new jobs will be
opened within a year, the cham
ber believes..
Scranton's industrial growth
providing these facilities for de
fense work is credited by RDM
to community efforts led by the
chamber.
Opposition Mat
The program is not without
opposition, notably from the
Philadelphia chamber of com
merce, -which has denounced it
as "dangerous and inimical to
the concepts of democracy."
The Philadelphia' group's op
position, however, was based on
the original plan to place de
fense contracts in distressed
areas without taking into consid
eration the possibility of buying
the same items at lower prices
elsewhere. Competitive bidding
has been incorporated in ' the
plan since its inception.
The Scranton experiment be
gan last fall when the armed
forces regional council, at the
invitation of the Office of De
fense Mobilization, sent 12
Army, Navy and Air Force pro
curement officers to the area.
They set up meetings with local
manufacturers and were joined
by civilian prime contractors.
The ODM's aim was to "de
velop and maintain necessary
military and economic strength"
through "the efficient use of all
our resources, including man

Contracts Placed
The Navy alone placed $42,
000,000 in contracts in the
Scranton - Wilkes - Barre area
j partly as a result of the October
meeting.
Procurement officers found
facilities for making dozens of
defense-needed articles, ranging
from floating foot bridges and
bomb fin assemblies to floor fur
naces, bullet jacket caps and alu
minum boats.
Among concrete results of the
Scranton test, the chamber of
commerce said, were: The Dutch
Mfg. Co., which made stokers
until the aluminum shortage,
was shut down; an aircraft
prime-contractor contacted the
company and placed $500,000
worth of orders before the day
was over; a total of 80 tool and
die makers will be back on the
payroll by the end of May.
Also expanding for defense
work are the following plants
brought to Scranton by the
chamber: -
Daystrom Corp., now employ
ing 500, is expected to expand
to. 2, 500 employes within 90
days.
W. L. Maxon is expected to
expand from 350 to 1,000 em
ployes within three months.
The Tobyhanna Signal Depot
at the edge of the county will
employ more than 5,000 work
ers when the plant is completed
in about a year.
Falls City, Neb. U.R) A
lightning bolt killed 12 head of
cattle which had huddled in faar
near a fence during a storm. The
bolt 'apparently struck the wire
fence and ricocheted off to hit
the cattle.

Grange met Friday. June 20,
with Master Ivan Wolfe presid
ing. First and second degrees
were given candidates: Mr. and
Mrs. Norman Thames, Mr. and
Mrs. Herb Crocker and Mr. and
Mrs. Harold Grebs and son
Johnny.
Roscoe Roberts made his re
port on State Grange meeting
which was held in La Grande.
State Grange voted to hold their
meeting in Medford next -ear.
Bertha Beck was paid a tribute
at State Grange and given a trip
to Hawaii. The trip was acted
out for her benefit, and was very
effective, Roscoe reported.
H.E.C. report was made by
Chairman Marguerite Shaw.
The next meeting night for
the Grange falls on July Fourth.
It was voted we not have a meet
ing at that time, as there are
apt to be quite a few out of
town. However, those wishing to
dance may meet at the hall on
that night and bring friends and
eats, and have a social evening.
Next meeting of the Grange will
be July 18.
Orrie Moore, our treasurer,
was t welcomed back from Cor
vallis where he has been attend
ing dairy school for the past four
months.
Letters of resignation were
sent in by Mr. and Mrs. Art Mil
ler and Mr. and Mrs. Keith
Seitz. They resigned their offices
and in their respective places the
following were elected: Paul
Larsen, assistant steward; Wil
letta Sims, Pomona; Bessie Lar
son, Flora, and Ken Shaw on the
executive' committee.
Lecture hour was put on by
boys and girls of the 4-H under
the direction of Mae Dalton. A
large group of boys and girls
were on the stage and as each
one's name and rank were read,
they in turn gave a talk on what
the 4-H stood for. Then 12 peo
ple were chosen from the audi
ence and lined up in front of the
stage, and the boys and girls
acted out a song, and each con
testant had to give the title of
the song.
We voted to drop all members
who have not paid up their dues
by June 30. Meeting was closed
