McCormick of Staten Island, was
elected In the spring primary on
a Taft ticket.
Republican State Chairman
William L. Pfeiffer, one of
Dewey'i political advisers, re
fused to comment on Neville's
decision but said he was con
fident the rest of the delegation
"will back the state Republican
organization and state commit
tee in their support of General
Eisenhower."
A bitter Eisenhower-Taft feud
for the state's uncommitted dele
gates has been raging since the
April primary. Taft backers pre
dict 17 or 20 New York first
ballot votes. Both camps have
overestimated their strertgtli.
Recent private preference
polls give Eisenhower 82, Taft
seven, and seven unpledged. But
the governor has a way of per
suading state political leaders to
change their minds.
Team at Work
The political team which won
Dewey the distinction of being
the first defeated Republican
presidential candidate ever to
be renominated is at work for
Eisenhower. They are pulling no
punches.

Brownell, the governor s top
lieutenants, opened New York
Eisenhower headquarters at Chi
cago this week, James C. Hag-
erty, Dewey's publicity chief,
took a leave of absence from his
state job to push the general's
drive. Dewey Is in complete
charge.
"We haven't played all our
cards yet," one adviser said.
"And, you can't count on what
they are saying now. Let'i wait
until the convention. "
Methods Vary
Reports on methods being used
by the governor to keep the dele
gates in line vary. One is that he
has promised to complete his
current term as governor, which
expires in 1954, and not accept
any bostion in Washington, Taft
charged he "threatened" dele
gates. But the truth is that it's
just old-fashioned politics.
As chairman of the delegation
Dewey will summon the New
York delegation for a caucus at
Chicago, This may occur early if
the Texas issue goes to the floor

enforce the unit rule, which
would bind the delegates to the

Four Men Sentenced
In Circuit Court
Four men were sentenced this
week in circuit court by Judge
H. K. Hanna, according to depu
ty District Attorney Bob Dick
ey.
Grant Everett Morrison, Port
land, who pleaded guilty to lar
ceny by bailee on June K, was
sentenced to seven years in the
state penitentiary. Vernal
Holmes Bumgardner, 84, 3465
Midway road, Medford, who
pleaded guilty to contributing to
the delinquency of a minor on
June 3, was given five years in
the state penitentiary.
A. D. Thompson, 220 South
Grape street. Medford, who had
pleaded guilty to two indict
ments for forgery, was sentenced
to two four - year terms in the
state penitentiary, to be served
concurrently, and Robert Virgil
Neighbors, who pleaded guilty
to obtaining money under false
pretenses on June 5, was given
a two - year suspended sentence
and delivered over to Lawn
dale, Calif.,- authorities where
he is wanted on similar charges.

Slates Friday Talk
Mrs. J. A. Ford, head of the
legislative bureau of the Town
send club at Washington, D. C,
will speak in a public meeting
at 8 p. m. Friday at the Knights
of Pythias hall. She will talk
on "National Old Age Insur
ance." Earl Mcbonald, state organ
izer of the Townsend club, will
also attend the meeting. Any
one interested in knowing the
activities of United States con
gressmen Jn regard to old age
benefits were invited to attend
Mrs. Ford's talk.
A covered dish dinner will
precede the talk. It will begin
at 6:30 p. m. A musical program
from 7:30 to 8 p. m. will follow
