Children's Program
In Upper Applegate

children of Upper Applegate
Sunday school participated in a
children'a day program held at
the Grange hall Sunday morn
ing. Following the program,
members of Medford Gideon so
ciety spoke on "Spreading the
Gospel."
The Sunday school has shown
a remarkable growth during the
past year, officers say, with a
present enrollment of more than
50 persons. Teachers include
Mr. and Mrs. Lester Wilcox and
Mrs. Louis Crammer, with Mrs
Lee Port as superintendent and
Mrs. Clarence Meier as pianist,
Walter Rhodes serves as secre
tary and Mrs. Crammer as
treasurer.
The Rev. D. D. Randall, mis
sionary of the American Sunday
school union will hold daily va
cation Bible school in July, and
it is expected that a conference
of young people from rural Sun
day schools and churches of
Jackson and Josephine counties
will be held for a week during
the summer.

Pocahontas lodge will hold the
regular business session Friday
June 27 at 8 p.m. in Redman
hall. Past chiefs will be at the
stations. They will include Mrs.
Louis Thompson, pocahontas;

Mrs. Carrie Milnes, wenonah and
Roy Stoy. powhatan.
A card party will follow the
meeting.

Royal Neighbors
Guests of Honor
Qn Anniversary
Mrs. A. B. Shirley and Mrs.
Joe E. Kingsley were honored
at a dinner and meeting of Royal
Neighbors of America lodge held
recently in the KP hall. The
event commemorated the 25th
anniversary of membership in
the lodge for the two women.
More than 70 lodge members
and friends attended.
The lodge marshals conducted
Mrs. Shirley and Mrs. Kingsley
to places of honor at tables deco
rated with silver candles and
flowers of purple and white,
the camp colors.
Mrs. Ethel Latham, toastmis
tress, interviewed the honored
guests. The two honored women
joined the lodge the same eve
ning at a joint initiation of candi
dates from Ashland, Jacksonville
and Medford. Both have held
the office of recorder and of
oracle, and have held other of
fices as well.
Both were presented 25-year
pins in recognition of their long
service to RNA.
A program followed dinner.
A tribute to the flag was given
by Mrs. W. H. Arnold and Mrs.
George Culy and accordion num
bers were given by students from
the Eve Prentice studio and
Hawaiian music was presented
by Mrs. C. R. Alexander and her
band. Juveniles of Mistletoe
camp presented a pantonine
which honored Mrs. Shirley and
Mrs. Kingsley and Mrs. Larry
Juniper sang.
Mrs. Carl Pearson and a com
mittee planned the dinner and
program.

Ashland Dr. Eugene Bow
man, associate professor of
mathematics at Southern Oregon
college, was at Eugene yester
day participating in the North
west Regional Work conference
for elementary school principals.
Dr. Bowman was the princi
pal speaker at the afternoon ses
sion. He discussed "Oregon Ele
mentary School Principals," giv
ing opinions about selected per
sonnel administration practices.
Several southern Oregon school
administrators are attending the
two-week conference.

Exhibits Paintings
Of Valley Artist
A large exhibit of the work of
Fritz Wertz, well known Rogue
Valley artist, opened last eve
ning at the art gallery in Erb
Memorial Student Union build
ing at the University of Oregon,
Eugene. 'v
A total of 154 paintings and
sketches make up the exhibit.
Opening of the exhibit was
timed to coincide with the open
ing of summer session at the uni
versity, and with a reception to
be held in the gallery Tuesday
night. The reception honored
faculty members, teachers, and
new members of the university
board.
The show will remain open for
a month.
Mr. Wertz states that included
in the exhibit are sketches and
watcrcolors of old buildings,
docks, fishing boats and other
interesting subjects at Newport
and Yaquina bay; scenes from
the Brookings, Chetcp and
Crescent City area; old street
scenes and historical buildings
at Jacksonville; Rogue river val
ley farms showing fowls and
animals; Table Rock scenes;
seven circus paintings which Mr.
Wertz did of the Clyde Beatty
circus; one of the covered
bridge, Wimcr; paintings made
of the Jackson County Sheriff's
Mounted posse and the barns
near Medford; scenes in Med
ford and Ashland, portraits of
the artist and his wife and the
remaining pictures left in the
Gold Hill "old-timer" portrait
series.
Eight Wertz paintings which
were recently sold to the Ford
company are to be reproduced
in the August issue of the Ford
Times magazine.
The main span of the Golden
Gate Bridge at San Francisco is
4200 feet long.
