The ex-comedian and producer
of big, brassy film musicals de
livers eulogies at the funerals of
show business greats.
Jessel spoke at the funeral of
Sime Silverman, the founder of
Variety, the show business bible,
more than 20 years ago. Since
then he has rung down the cur
tain on more than 100 pals, in
cluding Al Jolson, Fanny Brice,
Lou Clayton, Ben Bemle, Gus
Edwards, songwriter Bert Kal
mar and showman Sid Grauman.
Reason for Living
"I am always very anxious to
express my emotions. It's the
only reason I have for living,"
lie explained.
"I don't say I hope people will
get sick and die," he added. "But
if they do, I am here."
Jessel is an authority on vari
ous religions, Slid he writes his
funeral orations In the style of
the classics. One admirer calls
them "sheer poetry."
He speaks only at funerals of

"I had a line at Fanny Bricc's
funeral that knocked me cold,
though," he said. "It went, 'when
I leave here, I'll go and visit my
girl child, and she will say my
face is lined and my eyes are
sad, and she will ask why, and
I'll tell her, my Baby Snooks has
gone to sleep.' "
He thinks his experience as an
entertainer helps In eulogizing
since "this is part of show busi
ness, too."
Intrigue the Listener

through the eyes of the theater.

Jesscl's cronies such as George
Burns, Groucho Marx and Jack
Benny have told the producer
they hope he'll speak at their
funerals. Jessel is respected as
such a great euologizer, m fact,
that there's some concern as to
who will speak at his funeral.
One comedian suggested Jessel
record his own eulogy.
"There's been talk about it,"
Jessel said, "but it would be
rather morbid.
"Besides," he grinned, "I'm
not expecting it lately."
He's written his own epitaph,
however. It reads: "I tell you
from here In the shades that it is
all worthwhile."
