Sugar Ray's Handlers Say
Fight Delay Hurts Maxim
NEW YORK (UP) Sugar
Ray Robinson's handlers believe
light heavyweight champion
Joey Maxim "has already lost"
Wednesday night's postponed
fight because of weight careless
ness. Manager George Gainford said
Tuesday, "Maxim is definitely a
beaten man because of his fail
ure to work out yesterday after
the postponement announce
ment." Weak As Cat
Gainford explained that Cleve
land Joey would be "weak as' a
cat" if he pared down to the re
quired 175 pounds for Wednes
day's second weigh-in. Had he
gone through six or seven rounds
of gymnasium work Monday,
"his weight wouldn't have got
the Jump on him."
Maxim registered 174 34
pounds at Monday's weigh-in be
fore rain washed out their Yan
kee Stadium title fight. He was
Just a quarter-pound under the
limit after days of careful aim
ing at the 175-pound target.
Gainford estimated that Joey
had added at least four pounds
by Tuesday morning.
Odds Favor Robinson
Apparently the odds-makers
shared somewhat in Gainford's
belief, for they installed middle
weight champion Robinson the
favorite at 7-5. Before the post
ponement the quotation was
"even money."

And at Maxim's headquarters

loudly. Some skeptics thought
Kearns and Del Monte were put
ting on an act to give the Rob
inson camp a feeling of false as
surances
At any rate, Del Monte claim
ed he wasn t notified until 5
p. m. Monday that a second
weigh-in would be required. And

MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVEN
Youthful War Hero No. 1 Threat
To Grab PGA 1952 Championship
Louisville, Ky. (U.R) They
play the semi-finals of the PGA
golf championship Tuesday and
three guys who have been there
before are casting anxious
glances at a cocky young war
hero who never knows when he's
licked.
Bob Hamilton, the 1944 cham
pion from Evansville, Ind., and
Chick Harbert, the 1947 runner
up from Northville, Mich., meet
in one semi-final.
And in the other it is little
Jim Turnesa of Briarcliff Manor,
N.Y., the 1942 runner-up, against
the upsetting youngster of the
field three-time Purple Heart
winner Ted Kroll of New Hart
ford, N.Y.
Kroll, a rising tournament star
whose chief victory to date was
in the San Diego open last win
ter, awed the veterans Monday
as he battled back on the 36th
and final hole to square
match with favored Cary Mid
fllecoff and then wiped out the
Memphis dentist on the second
"sudden death" extra hole.
And in that whole, gasping
gallery, scorched by a blistering
sun, and that tense run to the
wire, Kroll was the most unper
turbed of the lot. He had seen it
tougher, once when he was
wounded at Anzio Beach and
twice again as he was hit during
those grim battles in the muddy
mountains.

School Housing Business Rapped
Portland (UP) A pro
posal for the state of Oregon to
go into the fraternity and soror
ity business at the University of
Oregon came under fire by a la
bor leader Tuesday.
James T. Marr, secretary of
the Oregon State Federation of
Labor, said such projects should
wait until a four-year state col
lege is provided for Portland.
Marr's remarks followed a recent
proposal to the State Board of
Higher Education by Dr. Harry
Ncwburn. president of the Uni
versity of Oregon, that the state
underwrite the houses and then
rent or lease them to living organizations.
Marr said, "It is tlma that
someone officially connected
with the state system of higher
education speak up to say that
the most pressing need is a
state-operated four-year college
for the Portland area."
