DAVIDSON
For years and years references
to a woman as being "a natural
blonde" or "a natural red-head"
have been common. Nothing was
evet said about a brunet in this
connection. Recently I have not
ed several references to "a na
tural brunet." Seems the number
of blondes and red-heads who
are switching to dark hair is in
creasing so greatly that the real
McCoy brunets feel they should
defend themselves. Why do so
many blondes and red-heads
want to be brunets? On that our
"Horses and Women" experts
have been trying to check with
no success.
Truck and Trash
Have you a garret? Anything
stored there? Have you any rela
tives who have a garret? Any
way, there is a book titled "Trea
sures in Truck and Trash" by
Morgan Towne. This book re
veals how cash may be acquired
for old magazines, newspapers,
dishes, toys, furniture, etc., that
might lie forgotten in a garret.
Tells where you can sell the
stuff, what you might, get for it,
etc. I believe a fellow after
studying this book could travel
around the country visiting old
houses and pick up things at bar
gain prices which he might sell
at quite a profit.
Horses and Women
An extremely important fac
tor in facial appearance is the
nose. Many a woman would be a
raving beauty were it not for the
shape of her nose. Quite a few
beautiful women, some of them
celebrities, were not good look,
ing until their noses were al'
tered by plastic surgery. The
general belief is that nose and
face lifting operations by plastic
surgery are only within reach of
the wealthy. That is not so.
While expensive, they are not
prohibitive for persons in mod
erate circumstances. The impor
tant thing is to get the right sur

The number of Manhattan ho
tels that welcomes dogs is rapid
ly decreasing. But they are still
welcome at the Plaza which is
one of the finest hotels in the
world. That has been the policy
of the Plaza since it opened in
1907. Incidentally, the Plaza cost
$17,000,000 to build when the
buying power of the dollar was
three times what it is today. The
first man to register at the Plaza
was Alfred G. Vanderbilt, second
was George Jay Gould, third was
none other than John W. "Bet a
Million" Gates, and they all had
their dogs with them. Our amia
ble springer, Timmy, has fre
quently stayed at the Plaza. He
is very popular there. Every
time we pass that hotel he stops,
looks up at me as much as to
say: "How about going in and
seeing the folks?" A remarkable
animal.
Almost Confidential

the law for a divorced man to

Vets Bonus Checks
iled in Oregon
Salem (U.R) The bonus divi
sion of the State Department of
Veterans' Affairs has mailed out
some 45,000 payments to veter
ans of World War II or their
next of kin, Hub Saalfeld, head
of the division, said Tuesday.
Saalfeld said payments will
continue now at the rate of
about 1500 a day or 7500 a week
because the division has caught
up with the backlog of checks
written by. the secretary of
state's office. And that office can
write the checks at the rate of
only about 1500 a day because
each check must be ruaV through
the protectograph.
Saalfeld said an unknown
number of veterans received the
wrong bonus checks. He said:
"It's one of those things that
just happen when you're run
ning thousands of bonus checks
through a machine. We urge
every veteran who received the
payment of someone else to re
turn the check to the bonus divi
sion in Salem at once. We will
then see that the veteran gets
his correct check."

Phoenix Group
Of $300 in Police Chief Salary
Phoenix About 75 people ap
peared last night at a public
hearing in the Phoenix Commu
nity club hall concerning the city
budget election which is being
held today in the city hall until
8 o'clock this evening.
The principal objection raised
by those attending to the pro
posed budget, which is $10,-
370.91 over the six per cent in
crease limitation, was the fact
that the budget calls for the po
lice chief's salary to be lipped by
$300 a year to $3,900.
After discussion lasting sev
eral hours on this point, the
council and citizen's budget com
mittee agreed with the group
opposing the salary increa.se to
have a representative meet with
the council at the next meeting
and help in the selection of a
new police chief, "if the council
