English," come up with actual
words now and then.
DEW is the symbol for Dela
ware Power & Light Co., while
CAR has nothing to do with
autos. It's the symbol for Capital
Airlines, Inc., stock. DIN stands
for Diana Stores Corp., and SUP
for Sutherland Paper Co.
In the list of greetings, HI Is
the symbol for American Hide
& Leather Co., while HO refers
to Houston Oil Co. of Texas
(Del.)
Some of the "words" are read
ily associated with company
names. HAT, for Instance, stands
for Hat Corp. of America, and
SUN for Sun Oil Co. Then
there's KID for Allied Kid Co. '
To the layman, ticker symbols
look like so much jumble but the
broker can read them with the
ease of a mother scanning a
nursery rhyme. Even such un
pronounceable symbols as PPG,
HFD, MPZ, WRS and BNF are
taken In stride.
Soma On Letter
Most companies have ticker
symbols of three letters to des
ignate the stock. Some very ac
tive issues on the New York
Stock Exchange have only one
letter, such as M for Montgom
ery Ward & Co. and X for U.S.
Steel Corp.
When the first ticker came
into use in 1867, the full name
of the stock and the price were
printed on the same line. Now
the name is shortened into a
symbol on the top line, with the
price quoted on the bottom line.
Before the days of the ticker,
brokers often resembled track
stars. They would take down
quotations in the exchange, then
sprint to their offices to contact
customers. Some brokers em
ployed "runners."

tickers over the nation make
that sort of activity unnecessary.
Department Decides
in the New York Stock Ex
change, the department of floor
procedure has the task of as
signing ticker symbols. Each of
the more than 1,080 common
stocks listed on the Big Board
has its own symbol.
If possible, a symbol is chosen
which may be readily associated
with the stock. That, however, is
often Impossible. Then, too, the
shape of the letters is a factor In
deciding symbols.
Down the alphabet from A
(Anaconda Copper Mining Co.) to
I (F. W. Woolworth Co.) the
symbols often form words by
chance.
TV, by the way, does not
stand for television. It is the
symbol for Tide Water Associat
ed Oil Co.
