Peaceful Use of Hydrogen. Power
Now Being Hinted by Scientists
Washington (U.R) Now they're
hinting at hydrogen power.
It has long been known that
the same atomic energy that
wrecked Hiroshima can be con
trolled to produce power. Wit
ness the atomic submarine, the
keel of which was laid at Groton,
Conn., on Saturday.
But scientists generally have
(aid that sort of atomic energy
which will be unleashed when
the H-bomb is perfected could
never be tamed for peace.
Harneising Sugg.st.d
One paragraph in a speech
made by Sen. Brlen McMahon,j
D-Conn., suggests, however that
the hydrogen reaction of the "su
perbomb" can be harnessed.
"There Is now hope," he said,
"that possibly there may de
velop years hence Important
peacetime applications of hydro
gen principles."

Senate Subcommittee
Sees Plane Building
Delay as Disastrous
Washington (U.R) The
Senate Preparedness subcom
mittee said Tuesday that Presi
d e n t Truman's decision to
"stretch out" airplane produc
tion is "an Invitation to disas
ter." Calling for the "quickest pos
sible" build-up of the nation's
air strength to the 143 groups
recommended by the Joint chiefs
of staff, the subcommittee said:
"The alternative Is the possible
extinction of our way of life."
Warnings Underscored
In an ominously worded re
port on its Investigation of the
nation's aircraft procurement
program, the subcommittee un
derscored recent warnings of
Air Force officials that Russia
would have two to three times
as many military planes as the
United States by 1954 and prob
ably gain world-wide air super
iority .
"The question of an adequate
air defense for the United States
Is a question of life or death for
ourselves and our institutions,"
the subcommittee said.
Defense leaders, It said, "do
not believe wa hava the strength
we' need; they do not believe we
will have the strength we need
unless we raise our sights at
once and raise them drastically."
Soviet Estimates High
The group said it is "deeply

power situation. It reported that
the best estimates on Soviet
plane production and plant ca
pacity are "shockingly high."
The subcommittee conceded
that It has not made a detailed
study of the fiscal reasons be
hind Mr. Truman's decision to
defer until 1955 the 143-wing
Air Force which the joint chiefs
of staff recommended for 1954.
"However, we are convinced
that the threat which faces our
security is so grave that an ov
erriding priority should be plac
ed upon building our defenses,"
the report said.
Won't Save Money
The subcommittee declared
that the decision to "stretch-out"
plane procurement "will, in the
long run, save no money," but
will instead increase the unit
cost per plane by 2'4 to three
per cent.
The Air Force association,
comprised of Air Force veter-
a n s , reserves and National
Guard members, also joined in
the attack on the administra
tion's "stretch out" decision and
urged congress to appropriate
money to build the 143-wing Air
Force by mid-1954.
Hum mwividiiuii was muling ai.
If he meant power, the prospects
would appear to be almost limit
less. Atomic energy is released by
fission splitting of the uranium
or Plutonium atom. H-bomb en
ergy is released by fusion weld
ing of the nuclei of hydrogen
atoms.
As a means of unlocking the
tremendous energy frozen in the
hearts of atoms, fusion is many
times more efficient than fis
sion. That is one reason the
H-bomb Is expected to be vastly
more powerful, pound for pound,
than an ordinary A-bomb.
Solution Mystery
How would you go about har
nessing hydrogen energy for non
violent labors is a mystery. Sci
entists have been saying for
years that only the multi-million-degree
heat of the A-bomb can
trigger the hydrogen fusion re
action. Once the trigger works, the
reaction Itself as explained by
the Atomic Energy committee
lasts only a split millionth of a
second. The result: incredible
violence.
McMahon is not the first to
hint that 'science has at least a
theoretical inkling of a fusion
reaction that mlgh be controll
able In the sense that atomic en
ergy is.
Dr. Kenneth S. Pitzer, former
direotor of research of the
Atomic Energy Commission, told
U. S. News & World Report in
an interview May 9 that the
H bomb reaction "might conceiv
ably have some peaceable use."
Asked if It might be controll
ed, he replied:
"It might, yes. I'm not even
going to postulate how it might,
but I never like to say that some
thing is impossible there have
been too many people who have
predicted somthlng was Impossi
ble and within 10 years some
body did it."

SPOT NEWS
By BOB AND JOE
Moths know no season but they
seem to be more active during the
summer months. Many people just
hang their cold weather clothes in
the closet without bothering to
have them cleaned. Then by fall
they find a moth hole that was
only a spot when they wore the
.garment the last time. That's just another reason why our
free service, Fumol Moth Protection is extra valuable at
this season.
Odorless, colorless, Fumol is harmless to fabrics. It
saves you the bother of wrapping and spraying. It protects
your precious woolens. It lasts from Cleaning to Cleaning!
Only the moths know Its there and it kills them.
Fumol is an added protection that will save your
clothes and save you money. We are using it on all apparel
and woolens.
