Radio Hams Plan
Defense Exercises
On Week-End Trip
The required shovel, axe and
bucket will be only a small part
of the equipment each group
will have on hand when mem
bers of the Rogue Valley Radio
club camp on Siskiyou summit
on Saturday and Sunday, June
21 and 22.
This occasion will be the 16th
annual field day sponsored by
the National Association of Ra
dio Amateurs and the American
Radio Relay league. Rogue Val-
ley club members will set up
battery-powered and gasoline
driven generator transmitters
and receivers at the summit.
To Tax Capacity
In this full dress rehearsal the
communications facilities nan
died by amateurs will be taxed
to full capacity. A nation-wide
network will be established.
Brief messages will be exchang
ed, as in actual emergency, con-
cccning location and number of
operators. The information will
parallel that which an amateur
station handling civil defense
messages would report to a con
trol center.
Officials of the club here said
that civil defense leaders are in
terested in the field day since
radio amateurs will have to
form the backbone of communi
cations in a major disaster,
American Telephone and Tele-
erarjh company, according to
Federal Civil Defense adminis
tration chart, plans to lean heav
ily on amateurs for radio sup
port of wire facilities.
Mobilgas, portables and fixed
stations, about 6,000 altogether
across the nation, will partici
pate in the field day.
Priiet Offered
Prizes are being offered to
Rogue Valley club members to
spur interest. There will be
awards for the first contact aft
er 4 p.m. June 21, for the most
contacts, the greatest distance,
the last contact before 4 p.m.
June 22 and hardest luck (break
downs and least contacts) There
will be a ladies' registration
prize.
: All interested are Invited to
watch operations and learn what
Is being done by radio hobbyists.
Those going to the site are in
itructed to go through the large
"cut" on Highway 99 at the
summit of the Siskiyous then to
turn off to the right. The site is
a short distance from the highway.
Remedial Work Given
At Phoenix School
Phoenix Remedial work fo
the first eight grades will.be of
fered in summer school at Phoe
nix, starting June 16, from 9 a.m.
to 12 noon, Monday through Fri
day for six weeks, according to
E. R. Jones, superintendent . of
schools.
Arrangements for the school
were made between Southern
Oregon college at Ashland and
the Phoenix public schools.
James sold, with classes under
the supervision of David Barker,
Lincoln school, Ashland.
The children may take special
remedial work In certain subject
fields and any others desiring to
take such work this summer may
attend.
Due to some remodeling being
done at the grade school, classes
will be held at the Phoenix high
school, the superintendent concluded.
Vacation Bible School
Slated in Rogue River
Rogue River Vacation
church school will open at Hope
Presbyterian church on Tues
day, June 11. The school will
continue four days each week
from 9 a.m. to 12 noon until
July 3.
The program opens with
study period, followed by a craft
period which will provide in
struction in making puppets as
well as other art work and dra
matic use of the finished pup-
pels. There will be a recreation I
period, music and a closing wor
ship service.

Traffic Fatalities
In Oregon Increase

Oregon highways this month, ac
cording to the state traffic safely
division. Accidents reported to
the secretary of statcs's office
have reflected sharp Increases
in traffic fatalities.
In one week 10 persons lost
their lives in traffic, seven in
only three accidents and three
In "freak" mishaps, the division
said. Reports now in the mall
are expected to bring the toll (or
the first two weeks of June to it
least 15.
