theft at the Green Haven State
prison in Stormville, 12 miles
north of here.
Shortly after he escaped from
been assigned as a trusty, he
appeared at the home of Marvin
Arnold, president of the Arnold
Drain Corporation, on Bullet,
Hole road.
He knocked on the screen
door and when Mrs. Dorothy
Arnold appeared, said:'
"I'm an escaped convict. The
cops are after men. I'm not fool
ing. I want you to let me in
here or I'll take your children."
Child Warned
Mrs. Arnold's younger child.
Nancy was playing on the front
lawn with a neighbor's child at
the time. Mrs. Arnold screamed
to them, "Run! Run!" and the
frightened children scampered
into the neighbor's home.
Snyder, infuriated, crashed
through the screen door and
rushed into the kitchen of the
Arnold home where he grabbed
the butcher knife from the table.
At this moment the school
bus returning their eldest daugh
ter, Betty Lou, stopped at the
door. Before Mrs. Arnold could
warn her daughter the child had
run into the house.
Driver Saw Action
Alex Williams, the school bus
driver, saw Snyder grab the
child when she entered the
house. He picked up a pistol,
notified the Carmel police and
returned to the Arnold home.
Meantime, Snyder had told
Mrs. Arnold "I want you to drive
me to New York." He held the
knife at Betty Lou's throat and
followed Mrs. Arnold into their
cellar garage.
Mrs. Arnold stalled for time
and before she started the car
Williams and a state trooper ar
rived and pleaded with Snyder
to release his hostages.
"If you' come near me, I'll
stab the child," Snyder threaten

Williams tried to talk Snyder
into releasing the child. As he
talked he sidled close enough to
risk a shot at the convict.

Table Rock The Thursday
morning frost did extensive
damage here to all garden crops,
potatoes and corn, but accord
ing to reports very little damage
to fruit. A similar frost occured
here in June 1019. We remem
ber resetting tomato plants about
June 10 that were completely de
stroyed by frost a day or two
before.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hull were
recent visitors at the John S.

they resided several years ago.
Miss Marsha Doran, 16-year

The local Ladies club meeting
has been postponed until Wed
nesday June 18.
A local lady has written to
Gov. McKay about the delay in
completing Bybee bridge and
connecting road contract and
the Governor has referred the
matter to W. C. Williams, as
sistant highway engineer. -
Also, Sams Valley Grange at
its last meeting discussed at some
length the long delay in com
pleting the bridge contract. Itj
was pointed out that work began
in October, 1950, which was sup
posed tc be a one-year job and
soon thereafter the bridge was
closed to travel. Since that time
people on the north side have
had to undergo some of the worst
kind of road conditions with the
end not yet in sight, according
to those discussing the matter.
The road committee was instruct
ed to get busy and see if some
action couldn't be started.
Nels Jacobson who passed
away suddenly at his home here
Saturday night had been a resi
dent here for some 30 years and
during that time had won the
high esteem of all who came
in contact with him. A home
body, devoted to his family, an
obliging neighbor,, industrious
worker, and loyal citizen as
those who assisted on the many
drives and served on the ob
servation post during the war
can testify. Mr. Jacobson by pref
erence was a tiller of the soil
and enjoyed. producing the things
people need to eat. The commu
nity extends heartfelt sympathy
to the bereaved relatives.
Relatives here attending the
shot into Snyder's chest. The
convict plunged the knife into
Betty Lou's stomach.
The two policemen then seiz
ed Snyder and dragged him from
the car.
Betty Lou died in less than
two hours. Snyder was charged
with murder.
