Oregon's First Bonus Payment?
To Start Going in Mail June 18
Salem (U.R) Oregon's first
bonus checks to veterans of
World War II will start going in
the mail next Wednesday, June
18, a couple of weeks earlier
than anticipated, according to
William F. Gaarenstroom, direc
tor of the State Department of
Veterans' affairs.
Some 75,000 bonus payments
amounting to more than $31,
000,000 should be paid by the
end of July. When sale of bonus
bonds was finally allowed sev
eral weeks ago, it was estimated
the payments would not start at
least until the first of July.
Pearson Signing Bonds
But State Treasurer Walter J.
Pearson is now in New York
signing 46,000 bonus bonds rep
resenting $46,000,000 in bonus
funds, and this money will be
placed on deposit to the credit
of the state of Oregon as soon
as the signatures have been com
pleted, probably by Friday of
this week.
The total bonus is expected to
be between SO and 60 million
dollars, with the best estimate
given at about halfway between
those figures. Oregon voted a
bonus of World War II to GI
Joes and Janes or their bene
ficiaries of $10 a month for do
mestic service and $15 a month
for foreign service to a maximum
in either case of $60b The aver
age payment is expected to be
about $415.

nesday, but Gaarenstroom said it
may take three or four days to
mail that many. The State Tax
commission has offered the vet
erans' department the use of its
fast letter stuffing and mailing
machine and an operator. But the
machine may be tied up tempor
arily part of next week for mail
ing quarterly tax payment no

Men Get Grants
To Further Study

Oregon research men, two from
Portland and two from Corval
lis, will receive grants totaling
more than $18,000 for studies in
public health fields, according to
the U. S. Public Health service.
Carl G. Heller of the Univer
sity of Oregon medcial school at
Portland will receive $6480 for a
study of factors influencing ster
ility for the National Institute of
Arthritis and Metabolic Disease,
Portland Doctor Gats Grant
Dr. Arthur R. Moore of Uni
versity of Portland was granted
$4128 for a study of metabolism
and excitabiliy of invertebrate
nerve in relation to narcosis. His,
study is for the National Insti
tute of Neurological Diseases
and Blindness.
A $5260 grant was awarded
to Dr. Bert E. Cbristensen of
Oregon State college,- Corvallis,
for a study of the preparation of
cerain purines and pyrimidlnes
for the National Cancer Insti
tute.

Current Status Told
The current status of the first
60,000 living veterans' bonus ap
plication is:
.Of bonus numbers 1 to 20,000,
a total of 19,526 have been ap
proved, 300 are in suspense
awaiting further evidence either
from the applicant or from
sources queried by the depart
ment, and 174 have been disal
lowed . because these veterans
were not eligible for Oregon
bonus.
Of numbers 20,000 to 40,000 a
total of 18,582 were approved,
1275 are pending and 143 were
disallowed. Of numbers 40,000
to 60,000 a total of 17,077 have
been approved, 3800 are pending
and 123 were disallowed.
Veterans whose clams have
been approved are not being no
tified. They will know it when
they received their bonus checks.
Veterans whose applications are
disallowed are informed.
Navy Claims Delayed
Some delay in payment of
Navy veterans' claims is expect
ed because the application of
every ex-sailor who had some sea
duty must be checked in the
Navy records centers in New
York and Washington, D. C, to
determine the amount of
duty performed ' ,as Navy dis
charges during World War II did
not give this information.
.More than 90,000 veterans or
next of kin of deceased veterans
have already applied for the
bonus.
The department expects to re
ceive another 40,000 applications
before the deadline for filing,
next December 1.
- It is estimated that all agri
cultural products, including live
stock, brought New Mexico far
mers and ranchers $300,000,000
in 1951.
