Violent Quake Jars Argentina, Chile

lent earthquake shook a. wide
area o( Western Argentina and
Chile Tuesday night.
It was felt as far east as Bue
nos Aires and La Plata,
Police reported at least one
person killed. There were no im
mediate reports of property
damage.
The. epicenter was placed be
tween the Western Argentine
towns of Media Agua and Car-
pinteria, about 30 miles south
of San Juan city where an esti
mated 10,000 persons died in a
1944 earthquake.

superliner, the SS United StHtes,
as the fastest big ship afloat
Wednesday following the sleek
vessel's first Atlantic speed
trial. .
U. S. maritime officials said
the 990-foot ship, biggest of the
nation's merchant fleet, , prbved
herself capable of "consider
ably" exceeding 34 knots in test
runs off the Virginia coast Mon
day and Tuesday.

Three Main. Proposals
May Stir Up Debate ,
At Grange Convention
La-Grande (U.R) At least
three proposed resolutions were
expected to stir up a ruckus
Wednesday at the annual meet
ing of the Oregon State Grange.
' The hot debate was expected
to come on a resolution asking
for a state law requiring an anti
Communist loyalty oath of all
officers and teachers of the
state's public schools; resolu
tions both for and against con
struction of the Pelton dam on
the Deschutes river, and a pro
posed big truck taxation bill.
Divided Sentiment Seen
The anti-Communist oath mea
sure was referred to the conven
tion education committee, head
ed by Walter Webb, The Dalles.
Committee discussion indicated
a divided sentiment with some
members Considering it an un
necessary slap at teachers. It
will come before the delegates
later.
Several central Oregon Gran
ges again are seeking to get the
state organization to reverse its
opposition to the construction of
Katherine Brush,
Novelist, Passes
New York (U.R) Kather
ine Brush, 49, novelist and short
story writer, died Tuesday in St.
Luke's hospital. She had been ill
for several months.
Mrs.- Brush, who began her
career as a reporter for the Bos
ton Traveler, had been a writer
of note since 1920. Probably her
most famous book was "Young
Man of Manhattan," published
in 1930. ..
Mrs. Brush had nearly com
pleted a novel when, she became
ill. It would have been her first
novel since "This Man and This
Woman," published in 1944.
She is survived by a son, Tho
mas Stewart Brush, and a broth
er, Thomas Ingham.

In adopting the report of an
interim committee that has spent

proposal to deepen the channel
