Dies in California
Helmer Oliver Moen, 53, a
former resident of the Griffin
Creek area, died June 5 at Lodi,
Calif., after a short illness,
friends here said today. Funeral
services were hell'. June 7 in the
Lodi funeral home chapel and
interment took place in Chero
kee Memorial -park, Lodk
Survivors include - his wife,
Clarabel Moen, Lodi; two chil
dren, Ivan Larry Moen and Mrs.
Marilda Guzman, Snd three
grandchildren, all of Victor,
Calif., four sisters, Mrs. Bena
Mold, Eugene; Mrs. Esther Hol
man, San Bernardino, Calif.;
Mrs. Nick Vestre, Bowden, N.
D.; and Mrs. Edna.Hamnes, Sour
is, S. D., and three brothers, Ed
win, Thornton, Calif.; Oscar,
Souris; and Leo, Bowden.
JEWEL THIEF SOUGHT

searched Wednesday for two
nonchalant jewel thieves who
escaped with $19,000 in gems
from the apartment of Shirley
Carmel, 28-year-old divorcee
and fiancee of singing star John
ny Johnston.

Mrs. Kader's Jury
Nears Completion

a jury panel for the first degree
murder trial of Jada Z. Kadar
continued here Wednesday.
The 12 Jurors and two alter
nates were not expected to be
sworn in until noon Wednesday
at the earliest.
Mrs. Kadar is accused ' of
causing the death of her three-year-old
daughter Sherrle Ellen
last January 23.
Portland newspapers were
criticized in Tuesday's testimony
by the defense attorneys for their
handling of the murder, charge
story.
They attempted to. get pros
pective jurors disqualified for
reading newspaper accounts of
the- opening day of the trial
Judge Lonergan said that after
the jury Is sworn' In it wilt not
be allowed to read stories of the
trial. -

Leased for Oil Exploration

(Jack) Bodkins, independent
Midland oil operator, has leased
more than 1,000,000 acres in
southeastern Washington and
eastern Oregon for oil and gas
exploration, it was revealed
Wednesday.
It was believed to be the larg
est acreage ever leased by an in
dividual for exploration. It was
also the first time oil and gas
leases have been acquired in
thaf area, oil industry spokes
men said.

DAM IN OPERATION

Falls dam on the Pend Oreille
river near .Newport, Wash., has
gone into operation several days
ahead of schedule, Col. E. C. Its-
chner, North Pacific division en
gineer, reported Wednesday.
Mid-Continent oil country for
many years, said he had no part
ners or associates in the venture.
He signed standard 10-year
leases for oil and gas explora
tion with some 10,000 land
owners. No government land
was involved.
Bodkins said the land had the
same surface geologic 'character
istics as the Williston Basin in
Montana and North Dakota and
the Permian basin in west Tex
as and New Mexico. He said a
survey of the leased area would
be made within the next 12
months.
Will Get Royalties
The leases provided that the
landowners would receive royal
ties of one-eighth of the proceeds
of any oil or gas taken from the
land, with Bodkins receiving the
remainder.
Bodkins has leases on exten
sive properties in west Texas and
New Mexico and has been active
In oil activities in other states,
working out of Jasper, Wyo., and
Denver, Colo.

Fuchs Smuggling
Story Brings Denial

Home Office denied Wednesday
a news story in Lord Beaver
brook's Daily Express which
said atom spy Klaus Fuchs had
been transferred to a new prison
because scientific papers were
smuggled from his Stafford Pris
on cell.
The newspaper story said
Fuchs, who was convicted of giv
ing American and. British atom
secrets to Russia, was trans
ferred to an observation cell at
Pentonville Prison in London.
