Word Spreading That
Stevenson To Reject
Draft by Democrats
By LYLE C. WILSON
Washington (U.R) The
word is spreading here and in
Illinois that Gov. Adlai E. Stev
enson would refuse a Democratic
draft for the presidential nomin
ation.
No such word can be conclu
sive until Stevenson himself has
said it. But the report is getting
around and some usually well
informed persons are convinced.
Widely Regarded
Stevenson has been widely re
garded as fitted to hold together
on election day the essential
elements of a strong Democratic
combination because of his of
fice, his political record and
his geographical location. Presi
dent Truman is among those who
believe Stevenson could do that.
No one doubts Mr. Truman's
genuine admiration for Steven
son. The President's effort to
commit Stevenson to seek the
nomination was ill-concealed.
Some appraisers of politics be
lieve that with Stevenson out
of it and the possibility of Mr.
Truman being tapped again
would be considerably increased.
Kefauver Has DeleaatM
Sen. Estes Kefauver has the
most delegates and Vice Presi
dent Alben W. Barkley has par
ty-wide popularity. Both would
be In a stronger position with
SteVenson out. Kefauver has 251
convention votes and no other
candidate has as many as 100
Needed to nominate, 616.
The other genuine candidates
are W. Averill Harriman of New
York, Sen. Richard , B. Russell
of Georgia and Sen. Robert S.
Kerr of Oklahoma. Whether Mr.
Truman believes any of them
other than Stevenson could win
will develop as convention bus
iness unfolds in Chicago.
Truman Wants Winner
Mr. Truman wants a winner,
He will exert himself, if nec
essary, to guide the convention
toward a candidate he believes
can win. Whether he would ac
cept a draft to avoid a weak
ticket or to break a deadlock
are questions the President re
sents. But if the convention be
comes deadlocked, as .geems
quite possible, Mr. Truman may
be confronted by a draft Tru
man effort.
The President has said accusa
tions that he plotted to obtain
his own renominatlon could
come only from warped or dis
eased minds. It accuses Truman
of nothing to observe that, de
spite his sharp insistence that
he will not run, he remains the
best living Democratic cam

convention delegates would be
