Machinery Speeds Trawler's Work
London U.P.) A revolution
ary type of radar and radio
equipped lish-factory trawler
with an aperture in the stern,
similar to whaling factory ships,
is being built at the Aberdeen
Yards of John Lewis.
The 245 -feet -long, 44-feet-broad,
ship is equipped with a
300-horsepower electric motor
operated winch which pulls the
trawl nets through the stern
aperture instead of the usual
over-the-side procedure.
The catch is then dropped
through hold openings into fish
pans in the factory space, where
machinery washes, fillets, skins
and beheads the fish, after which
they are weighed and packed
Into trays for quick freezing.
Kept In Storage
The fish then are packed into
cartons and passed by conveyor
belts to storage holds, where
they are kept at a temperature
of 5 degrees fahrenheit.
Very little of the fish Is
wasted. Offal is fed by convey
ors to the fishmeal plant, where
it is processed intp fish meal for
use by cattle and poultry. Fish
liver oil is extracted from the
livers.
The ship, which is being built
for Chris. Salvesen and compa
ny, which formerly operated
whalers, carries fuel to enable it
to stay at sea 80 days without
refueling. It is powered by a
1900-brake horsepower marine
oil erigine.
A full installation of radio
equipment has been ordered
from the Marconi company. This
includes long and medium range
communication facilities to keep
the ship in touch with shore and
other fishing vessels, radar di
rection finders and sounding ap
paratus. Bonn, Germany U.R) T h e
West German government has
been notified that substantial
uranium fields have been dis
covered in the Black Forest
Mountains, reliable sources said

He is 11-year-old John Auker-

John is one of six students and
one teacher at the school who
were licensed by the Federal

"It was the biggest thrill of my

Landers, a veteran film direct-1
or, is the only movie maker in
jwstBar H o 1 1 ywood
who can boast
today of mak
ing two mov
ies at once.
One picture
Is the film you
see in the pop
c o r n palaces.
The other is a
home movie he
makes of him-
Aline Moebr self making
the movie, and that celluloid
gets exclusive showings, minus
the popcorn, in his Beverly Hills
home.
Landers, who began directing
pictures in 1927, has made home
movies on each of his movie
sets, a hobby like a postman
taking a walk on his day off.
"It a my permanent record as
the years go by of my career,
he explains.
Entire Life's Work
'I get more of a thrill out of
looking at these pictures than
out of anything else. My entire
life's work comes before me on
the screen.
'Sometimes," he says. "I lust
sit in my living room in the dark
all alone to watch them."
The home movies star such
luminaries as the late Warner
Baxter, Boris Karloff, Paul
Henreld, Leo Carillo, Jack Oak
ie, Harriet Hllliard, Teresa
Wright, Lucille Ball and George
Montgomery.
With his 8 mm. color cam
era, Landers shoots the scenes
of the actors rehearsing, featur
ing their mistakes and off-stage
giggles.
He also films the thespians
lounging around between scenes
or shooting dice, and lenses the
crew members, giving them a
chance to get in front of the
camera, too.
Gets Background
One home movie shows Joan
Fontaine in her' first starring
role 16 years ago, with the late
Richard' Dix in "Skyways." In
ly ALINI MOW
Waited Press Carreepeeeeet
his living room you can see how
waves and snow are made for
movies; and how "process"
background scenes and sky
backdrops bring the outdoors
indoors.
After a home movie is finish
er. Landers asks the cast and
crew over to see it. Dlx got
around to seeing the films just
three months before he died.
The director plans to invite Misa
Fontaine one. of these days to
see herself as a teen-ager.
Having no censor, the home
movies get by with scenes that
are snipped out ot the theater
version. One shows Steffi Dune
doing a sexy dance.
"But the censors cut the
bumps out of the regular pic
tures," he says. i
