Champ All Way
For One Count proved a
champion all the way as he bust
ed the Triple Crown into three
pieces for the second year in a
row. He came out of the final
turn just about on even terms
with Blue Man and the pair stag
ed a two horss race down the
straightaway.
The other four starters were
all through by that time and as
Blue Man and One Count poun
ded through the straightaway
the huge crowd sensed that an
upset was in the making.
Conn McCreary, the come
back kid from St. Louis, Mo.,
was on the outside with Blue
Man, swinging his whip for all
he was worth.
But while each sting of his
bat stirred Blue Man into great
er efforts he was no match for
One Count, a son of Count Fleet
who won this same time honor
ed stake in 1943.
Pulls Away
At the eighth pole, halfway
through the home stretch the
crowd began to roar. For One
Count was steadily pulling away
and he went under the wire
slightly eased up. The payoff
board in the Infield lit up with
$27.60, $4.60 and $2.80 across
the board.
Blue Man paid only $2.50 and
$2.50 for place and show as he
went down to his third defeat
In seven starts this year.
