Camp and Auxiliary
To Meet Next Sunday;
Convention Announced
Meetings of Colonel Sargent
camp and auxiliary, United
Spanish War Veterans, will be
held in Redmen hall Sunday,
June 15.
A potluck dinner will precede
the meetings, with Mrs. Frank
Widner as chairman. Members
are asked to call Mrs. Widner.
This will be the last meeting be
fore vacation, and plans will be
made for a picnic in July.
The department convention of
the United Spanish War Veterans
will be held in La Grande, Ore.,
July 13-16. The grand convoca
tion, Military Order of the Liz
ards, will be held there Tuesday,
July 15. Mrs. Harry W. Barne
burg will take the office of the
grand gila monster for the year
of 1952 and 1953.

Former Resident
To Receive Degree
Mr. and Mrs. R. Wayne Crews
and sons, Joel and Robin, of Los
Alamos, N.M., have been in Med
ford to visit Mrs. Crew's mother,
Mrs. Hdith Whillock, 1003 West
Main street, and Mr. Crews'
mother, Mrs. Lucy Crews, 1003
West Tenth street. Both Mr. and
Mrs. Crews formerly lived here,
and Mrs. Crews was Alpha Whil
lock before her marriage.
After a stay here Mr. and Mrs.
Crews went to Corvallis and to
morrow Mr. Crews will be given
a doctor's degree during the an
nual commencement ceremonies
at Oregon State college. Mr.
Crews is a nuclear physicist for
the government.
The couple will return here
briefly before returning to New
Mexico.

Plaza apartment, left Saturday
for Ft. Riley, Kan., to attend
graduation ceremonies of offi
cer candidate school. Their son,
Bruce Stafford, will be gradu
ated and commissioned a second
lieutenant In the United States
army.
The new officer will then ac
company his parents on a vaca
tion trip to visit relatives in
Tennessee and Michigan. BefoVe
entering the army he was gradu
ated from Oregon State college,
Corvallis.

initiation of new members

Flag Program Planned
For Meeting of Union
A flag day program is being
arranged for the June 12 meet
ing of the Woman's Christian
Temperance union to be held at
2 p. m. in the Girls Community
club. Mrs. Robert Taylor is In
charge of the program.
The flower mission chairman,
Mrs. Edna Purcell will present
a program of memories of three
deceased members and also for
two past national presidents,
Mrs. Ella Boole and Mrs. Ida
B. Wise Smith.
Those who can are asked to
take bouquets of flowers to the
meeting, the bouquets to be tak
en to Medford hospitals after
the meeting.
Mrs. Guy Cox, president, will
preside over the business meet
ing. The refreshment committee
is Mrs. Ernest Santo, Mrs. Lucy
Lyman and Mrs. F. R. Hagerty.

bekah lodge, held Wednesday
night in the Odd Fellows hall,
was attended by 41 members,
including a number of Rebekahs
from some distance.
Present from Fort Jones,
Calif., was a group from Ora Re
bekah lodge, including Mrs. Zoa
Mello, noble grand; Mrs. Zelmer
Bollinger, chaplain and past no
ble grand; Mrs. Lydia Scarbor
ough, warden; and Mrs. Pearl
Hammer, secretary and past dis
trict deputy. Mrs. Dora Ham-
mersley, Amethyst R e b e k a h
lodge member now living in
Fort Jones, brought the visitors.
Also from out of town were Mrs.
Kate Kellogg of Medford, char
ter member of Amethyst Rebek
ah lodge, and Mrs. Bertha , Gar
man of Jacksonville.
The lodge drill team, in white
formal gowns, formed a cross in
the center of the floor while the
vice grand, Mrs. Cecil Johnson,
conducted a candlelight cere
mony of renewal of the obliga
tion. Mrs. Paul Thompson, drill
captain, directed the ceremony.
Mrs. Paul Thompson arranged
a rehearsal of the degree staff
for Monday, June 9, at 8 p.m. at
the lodge hall, to prepare for ini
tiation at next lodge meeting.
Reports on the Rebekah As
sembly of Oregon, held at Salem
were given by Mrs. Lester
Thompson, who served as a dele
gate and was appointed district
deputy president; Mrs. George
Dorman, who served as alter
nate, and Mrs. Lester Parker. It
was reported that the Gold Hill
lodge had received an honorable
mention at the Assembly, for
publicity stories.

Richard Strauss Opera
To Have World Premiere
New York 4U.R) The world
premiere of Richard Strauss' last
opera, "The Love of Danae" (Die
Liebe der Danae) will be the
highlight of this year's Salzburg
Festival in Austria July 26 to
August 31.
The opera was completed dur
ing World War II and was dedi
cated by Strauss to the festival.
Originally scheduled for the
1943 festival, the opera was
ready for presentation when Nazi
Germany's propaganda .chilet,
Joseph Goebbels, ordered all
theaters closed. Austria's singers
and actors were placed in war
plants.
"The Love of Danae" will be
conducted by Clemens Krauss
and produced by Rudolf Hart
mann.
The program of the festival
will include five operas, three
plays, nine concerts of the Vienna
Philharmonic Orchestra and 21
other concerts and musical
events.
Other operas to be presented
are "Don Pasquale" by Donizetti,
"The Marriage of Figaro" and
"The Magic Flute" by Mozart
and "Otello" by Verdi.
