    Student to Spend .
i Summer on Cruise;
Brother Initiated
'Gary Boshears, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Miner T. Boshears, 408
South Grape street, and a stud
ent at Yale university, will
spend several weeks this sum
mer on a naval cruise to Europe.
The young man is studying un
der a naval ROTC scholarship.
At present the student is vis
iting relatives at Knoxville,
Term., and later will report at
Norfolk, Va. He will be in Med
ford for a visit in late summer.
Young Boshear's brother, Ken
neth, was recently Initiated into
the Oregon State college chapter
of Kappa Psi, national honor
fraternity for students in phar
macy. He is a junior. He was se
lected for the membership on
the basis of scholarship and
character. The young man is al
so a member of Scabbard and
Blade and Sigma Phi Epsilon
fraternity.
Kenneth Boshears will leave
soon for Ft. Gift, Okla., where
he will train with an ROTC
unit.
Both young men are gradu
ates of Medford Senior High
school and both were valedic
torians of their classes.

p.m. potluck luncheon will be

Business Meeting Set
For Mothers' Club;
Services Conducted
Central Point A business
meeting will be held by Central
Point Navy Mothers' club Wed
nesday, June 11, at 2 p.m. in the
American Legion hall. All Navy
mothers, as well as members,
are invited to attend.
Last meeting of the club was
held at the home of Mrs. Clar
ence Krieger, Medford. Guests
were Mrs. Carl Quackenbush
and her mother, Mrs. Dora
Lynch, Mrs. Tom Culbertson and
Mrs. Moore. Much sewing was
completed during the afternoon.
1 Navy Mothers also conducted
services at Bear Creek bridge
Memorial day. A tribute was
read by the Rev. Don Whitney,
who also led in prayer. Chap
lain Adams gave a closing verse
as bouquets and rose petals were
dropped on the water in me
mory of men who gave their
lives at sea.
Annual Picnic Planned
For Episcopal Youth
This year's annual picnic for
the classes of St. Mark's Episco
pal church school will be held
today at 3 p.m. at the Table
Rock estates home of Mr. and
Mrs. John Day.
Mrs. Douglas Roach is in
charge of games and activities
for the kindergarten group; War
ren Elliott has arranged prizes
and games for the intermediate
classes, and the junior and sen
ior high school group activities
will be directed by Mrs. Stanley
Phillips.
There will be a fireside sing.
The Prospect mission of the
church also will have a group of
church school students there un
der direction of Mrs. Velma Rod
gers. Those driving to the picnic
should go to the Tolo bridge
crossing and signs will direct the
route from there, Mrs. Paul
Skinner, general chairman of
the picnic, stated.

Student Elected
To Phi Beta Kappa
At Reed College
Ellis McCurley, ion of Mrs.
Lorna E. McCurley, route 2,
box 407, was elected June 7 to
the Reed college chapter of Phi
Beta Kappa, national scholastic
honorary fraternity. Selection
for membership in this society
is considered the highest honor
a student may attain in the field
of scholarship.
This morning he wa one of
14 seniors who were to attend
a traditional breakfast given for
the new members by the repre
sentatives of the fraternity on
the Reed campus. Also today he
is to be graduated from the in
stitution with a degree in
physics. Later this year Mr. Mc
Curley and his wife will go to
the University of Wisconsin
where he has been awarded an
assistantship in physics and
where he will work toward a
doctor's degree.
Mr. McCurley was graduated
from Medford Senior High
school with the class of 1943 and
from the United States Naval
academy at Annapolis in 1946
and was commissioned an offi
cer. He served in the navy dur
ing World War II.
. Mr. McCurley's mother and
sister, Peggy, are at Reed today
to attend the graduation.

Four students took top awards among the 1952 graduates of
Medford Senior High school when honor students were announced
during the commencement ceremonies Thursday night at the
school. Pictured (at top, left to right are Janet Coyle. daughter ot
Dr. and Mrs. Charles Coyle. and Roy Rogers, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Earl Rogers, named co-valedictorians of the class. Young Rogers
also won the Active club, and Oregon State college scholarships:
the American Chemical society and Honorary Science awards,
was named winner of the Elks lodge oustanding senior student
award and served as president of the Associated Student body his
senior year. Named outstanding senior girl was Carolyn Coleman
(below at left) and Terry Maddox. outstanding senior boy. Miss
Coleman is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Coleman, and Terry
Maddox is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Rupert Maddox. (Shanglo and

Miss Mary Virginia Wait of
Medford was recently given spe
cial recognition at .the annual
Oregon State college honors and
awards convocation by being
pledged by Phi Kappa Phi, na
tional all-school scholastic honor
society.
Graduate students, seniors and
juniors were selected on the ba
sis of scholarship and campus
activities.
Miss Wait is also a member
of Alpha Lambda Delta scho
lastic honor society for sopho
more women; Phi Sigma, honor
society for those studying biologi
cal science and Kappa Delta Pi,
national honor society In education.
Miss Wait, daughter of Mrs.
F. Wilson, 220 Vancouver ave
nue, is a senior in science and
will be graduated this month.
Rotana Committees
Plan For Convention
At Special Meeting
Committees making plans for
the national convention of Ro-
tana club, to be held in Med
ford in July, reported at a spe
cial meeting of the group held
Tuesday evening at Girls Com
munity club.
Mrs. Dora Powell, president
of the group, appointed Mrs.
Lois Hunter, Mrs. Jeanne Rose
and Miss Anna May to plan a
cooked food sale this month.
Mrs. Susie Riddle, Mrs. Stella
Breed and Mrs. Lois Hunter
were named to the budget com
mittee for the coming year.
The Ladies Aid Society of St.
Peter's Lutheran church will
picnic Thursday, June 12 at 1
p.m. in Hawthorne park. Women
of the church are Invited. Mrs
Kenneth F. .Korby and Mrs.
Homer Pleyer are in charge. Cof
