setting up the forest timber re
serve program in 1944 left the
administration of the program to
the forest service. He said Con
gress should leave it in the
hands of the federal agency.
"All six units set up under
this program would be jeopard
ized if congress reviewed every
case to which any objection was
made," Mack said.
Protects Economy
The program reserves certain
timber lands for lumber mills in
the area and prevents compan
ies from other parts of the coun
try from coming in and logging.
It is designed to "protect" the
economic life of the localities
where the trees grow. 9
Mack said the Lakeview unit
was set up for use by four mills
in Lakeview and Paisley, Ore.
Mill owners can log 50,000,000
feet of timber a year from the
unit which holds an estimated
total of 3,000,000,000 feet.
Mack said the unit was intend
ed to conserve the forest for 60
years.
