Willamette university at the an
nual commencement of the Sa
lem school on Monday, June 2.
The southern district included

Here Shows Growth
First Methodist church of
Mcdford has received 1,100
members in the past five years,
according to Its annual report.
Membership of the church-
five years ago was 1,100. Net
membership as of June 1 this
year was 1,655, the report said.
The total represents at net gain
of 103 over June 1, 1951, when
membership was 1,552. The
church received 187 new mem
bers during the year and 84
members were removed by
transfer, death or other means.

Recently named trustees of
the church for three year terms
were R. J. Bills, F. F. Burk and
Herb Sampert. Among other of
ficers selected were Mrs. Anne
J. Gorby, treasurer and finan
cial secretary; E. J. Neumann,

thorne park at 1:30 p.m. The pa
rade will begin at 2 p.m. and
participants will march to the
civic center park on West Main
street. The Eve Prentice accor
dion band will provide music.

Word of God to the common peo
ple. Turvey, who has been a self
supporting lay preacher for sev
eral years, is home missionary
leader of the Valley View church.
Alaska Minister
Nazarene Speaker
The Rev. J. Melton Thomas,
Fairbanks, Alaska, will be the
speaker Sunday evening at the
Church of the Nazarene, accord
ing to pastor Vernon L. Wilcox.'
Mr. Thomas has spent nearly
five years In the northern terri
tory, and has been the pastor of
the Church of the Nazarene in
Fairbanks during that time. The
church has enjoyed an outstand
ing growth and is considered
one of the strongest in Alaska at
the present time, Mr. Wilcox
said.
A special program, featuring
orchestra and choir numbers,
under the direction of John Eby,
will precede Mr. Thomas' ser
mon. The service begins at 7:30
p.m., and the public is invited.

The annual Circuit meeting of
the Medford Free Methodist
church was held Wednesday
evening.
Mrs. T. W. Conner was elect
ed delegate to the annual confer
ence at Portland, July 9 to 12.
Miss Grace Andrews was elect
ed reserve delegate.
Mrt Ralph Harger was re-elected
to the board of trustees for
the term ending in 1955. The
board of stewards for the new
conference year will be: Mrs. T.
W. Conner, Mrs. Jobn Blasts,
Mrs. Cy Tracy, Mr. Everett Ma
lott, and Mr. Floyd Shroyer.
R. H. MATHEWSON
Four Square Pastor
R. H. Mathewson
New Pastor Here
The Rev. R. H. Mathewson Is
new pastor at the Foursquare
church here. He succeeds the
Rev. Harry Hansen.
Mr. Mathewson, who comes
here from Onalaska, Wash., has
been engaged in evangelistic
work during the past two years.
He has held meetings on both
the east and west coasts in many
of the larger churches.
The new pastor took his train
ing in Los Angeles. He has been
engaged in the ministry for 18
years. Mr. and Mrs. Mathewson
and their daughter, Cheryl Joy,
are residing at the church par
sonage at 302 South Grape
street.
Mr. Hansen reportedly has en
tered evangelistic work in the
gulf area states. He will eventu
ally locate in Atlanta, Ga., it was
said.
Baptist Church
School To Open
The First Baptist church will
hold its Vacation Bible School
for two weeks, beginning Mon
day, June 9.
On the program for boys and
girls from three years old
through junior high age will be
Bible lessons, stories, songs,
handcraft, and recreation.
The sessions will be held each
week day from 9 until 11:45
a.m. and will be climaxed by an
all-school picnic the afternoon of
June 19 and by the closing dem
onstration program at 7:30 p.m.
on June 20. All boys and girls of
the vicinity are invited to this
school.

John Eby To Attend
Nazarene Conclave
John Eby of Medford, will be
an official delegate to the 13th
General Assembly of the Church
of the Nazarene to be held in
Kansas City (Mo.) municipal au
ditorium, June 19-28.
More than 10,000 delegates
and guests will attend from the
64 districts of the church In the
United States, Canada and the
British Isles. Nationals and dele
gates will also come from 28
other world areas where the
missionary program of the
church is underway.

town street. That building was
erected in 1928 under the lead
ership of Mrs. George Icenhow
er. Through the ministry of the
Reverend Winney, who succeed
ed Mrs. Icenhower, the church
was affiliated with the Assem
blies of God.

Downey and G. O. Baker and
the present pastor, the Rev. J. S.
Manchester.
Under leadership of Mr. Ba
ker the church began to look for
ward to a new building and pur
chase lots at Chestnut and West
Main streets. Mr. Manchester,

1950. Shortly after this time the
lots were disposed of and the
Ray property at Quince and
West Main streets was bought
for a church site.
The present building has been
constructed under the leadership
of Mr. Manchester and the offi
