Senate Votes To
Abolish Embargo
On Foreign Cheese
Washington (U.R) The Sen
ate, after a short spat over
whether Kalian cheeses are
"filthy," voted Wednesday night
against continuing the present
embargo on foreign cheeses and
other dairy products.
The action means partial Sen
ate acquiescence to President
Truman's request for outright
repeal of the embargo, which
has been sharply criticized by
the State Department and for
eign governments.
To Protect Farmers
The embargo, scheduled to ex
pire June 30, was written into
the Defense Production Act to
"protect" American dairy farm
ers against foreign imports. It
requires the government to
limit imports of cheese, butter,
fats, oils, peanuts and rice when
they threaten to reduce domestic
production.
In Senate debate over extend
ing the Defense Production Act,
Republican Sens. Karl E. Mundt,
S. D., and Milton R. Young,
N. D., offered an amendment to
continue the present embargo.
Mundt said it was needed to
"protect" American cheese pro
ducers from the competition of
"filthy Italian cheeses." i
Allies Renew Stand
On Prisoner Issue
Panmunjom, Korea (U.R)
United Nations truce negotiators
refused Thursday to "forcibly
and violently" return Red pris
oners of war to Communism and
warned enemy negotiators their
"hollow demand falls on deaf
ears."
Maj. Gen. William K. Harri
son, senior Allied delegate, said
the U.N. never would pay the
"barbarous price" of forced re
patriation.
He again suggested the Red
prisoners held by the Allies be
rescreened in the presence of
Communist observers, after an
armistice had been arranged
Maritime Official

chief of the maritime adminis
tration's ship repair and main
tenance division, was arrested
by FBI agents Thursday on
charges of embezzlement from
the government.
Gonzales was arrested in
Washington.
FBI Director J, Edgar Hoov
er said wholesale diversion and
sale of rope from the "moth
ball" maritime fleet at Beau
mont, Aex., was involved. '
