At Gold Hill Get

Gold Hill Harry A. Qualll of
the Social Security office in Med
ford appeared at the meeting of
the Gold Hill city council Mon
day night ,to explain the social
security plans as it would effect
city employees who will soon
vote on the question of partici
pating in the plan.
He explained the meaning of
fully insured", "currently in-
surred" and method of figuring
retirement payments. Questions
asked by councilmen and em
ployees were answered.
Mayor O. W. Newland con
ducted the business meeting. A
statement prepared by Council
man Milton Steinmetz, chairman
of the sewage disposal commit
tee, showed that $2,728 had been
spent for labor, and $2,977 for
materials to put the plant into
shape to comply with require
ments of the state sanitary office.
Filter arms, which will be deliv
ered in August, will cost $316
plus the labor of installing them.
This will make a total of slight
ly over $6,000 for disposal plant
work.
Finances Reported
City Recorder Ferd Jones re
ported on the amount of money
left in the city bank account, and
the probable expenses from now
until tax receipts start coming in
next winter. The council estimat
ed that if no emergencies should
arise, it would probably be pos
sible to meet all expenses with
out borrowing.
A letter from Fire Chief Mel
ford Hood was read, stating that
the fire department had been
called recently to the premises
owned by Vivian Bailey at 519
First avenue, to put out a fire,
and that he had found definite
.hazards existing in the house at
that location. George Turner,
city superintendent, stated that
Gold Hill does not have an ordin
ance under which such a situa
tion can properly be handled. He
showed a copy of the Medford
ordinance covering such fire
hazards and turned it over to the
council for further study.
Shavings Protested
Councilman Don Morrow stat
ed that residents along Highway
99 had complained about shav
ings blowing onto their prop
erty from the truck used to haul
waste from the planing mill In
Gold Hill. He said that the loads
of shavings were formerly cov
ered with canvas, but were now
being hauled with no covering.
The recorder was instructed to
write to the planing mill owners
about the matter.
A form received from the
State Industrial Accident Com
mission was filled out to obtain
insurance on the members of the
volunteer fire department. A
plan for street improvements, In
cluding oiling and graveling

committee, with the work to be
done with state street funds.
