Modern Shipbuilders Learn
From Ancient Roman Models
Lake Nemi, Italy (U.R)
Modern shipbuilders have suc
ceeded finally in doing what the
shipbuilders of the Roman emp
eror Tiberius apparently did as
a matter of course.
Two scale-models of ships of
the imperial Roman navy, built
from plans based on salvaged
hulks of the originals, are on
display here after more than
three years of construction work
at one of Italy's best-equipped
shipyards, near Naples.
The ancient Romans built the
' originals right on the shores of
the lake where they were
brought back to light in 1930,
after having lain on the lake
bottom for nearly 2,000 years.
The two tiremes, dating from
about 41 B. C, were discovered
in 1829 by Anneslo Fusconi,
an Italian who invented a sort
of primitive "bathysphere" to
explore the bottom of Lake Nevi,
15 miles south of Rome.
Legend Recalled
According to legend, the lake
had been the scene of Bacchan
alian orgies and rites in honor of
the goddess Diana. The two
ships, built by order of Emper
or Tiberius, were sunk Just off
shore. Fusconi scoured the bottom
in his submarine invention and
came up with bits of marble col
umns, copper nails, beams and
pieces of metal, indicating the
existance of the two ships.
One hundred years later, Mu
ssolini had the lake drained and
the, ships brought to light. The
hulks, after being restored, were
set up on display in a museum
on the shore of the lake.
During the war, the relics
were destroyed.
Fortunately, the Italian min
istry of marine had detailed
photographs and plans of the
two ships and a project was or-

ganized to reconstruct the ves
sels.
Skill Required
It took the best shipbuilding
skill to rebuild one-fifth scale
models of the ships. The cost of
reconstructing the originals on
the site would have been prohib
itivc, according to engineer's es
timates.
The 220-foot length and 65-
foot width of the 2,000-year-old
triremes were copied in exact
scale madels 49 by 13 feets, at
a cost of $100,000, including
transportation from the Naples
shipyard to Lake Nemi.
The models have been towed
by tank to the lake and set up
in the museum that had housed
the originals.
