TEEN-AGE INFATUATION
NEEDS KINDLY PATIENCE
AND TACT
Parents of teen-agcri are often
worried when their children be
come infatuated with what they
regard as "unsuitable" people.
The more they talk against
them, the stronger the infatua
tion is likely to become. How to
handle the problem it the ques

ten. Everyone in her neigh
borhood knows of her condi
tion. She works three or four
days a week, when she is able
and, if my son hasn't any mon
ey, she will buy him things.
If my son doesn't go io see her
and she knows where he is,
she will suddenly appear
there. Since she had quite a
lot of influence over him, I'm
afraid she will coax him into
getting married. He has a hard
time getting a Job, because of
his age, so he would not be
able to take on responsibility
like that. Please tell me what
to do."

By IUZABITH HURLOCK, H.D.
This you could help him to real
ize by asking the young woman
kindly but pointedly, in front of
your son how much her illness
costs her a month or year. Then
tell him how much It costs you
to run a home, even when you
count only the bare necessities.
The second thing you can do Is
to Invite the young woman to
your home frequently and have
some of your son's contempor
aries there at the same time. Be
nice to this young woman but
help your son to see how out of
place she is with the group he
has been going with. Never treat
her as an outcast or refuse to
have her In your home. That
might drive your son to do the
very thing you fear, which is
to marry her. So long as you
treat her as a friend of the fanv
lly, he will not be tempted to
meet her outside of the home or
to run away and marry her.

Your Health and Its Care
By DR. WILLIAM BRADY, M O.
Rfadtrs should addran Inquiries lot William Brady,
26S II Canine, Btvarly Hills, Cal.
HAD YOUH VISION
From the dismal, mud-splattered
December day I hung out my
shingle informing the Penn Yan
public, in gold
letters on a
black board on
larger than the
side panel of a
circus wagon,
that the serv
ices of Doctor
William Brady,
Surgeon &
Physician,
were available
to any one who
Pi. Brady
had from two to four bits in his
jeans, it seemed as though I ran
into one snag after another be
cause I could not keep my mouth
shut, and still get into a lot of
trouble that way.
Many of the patients who took
a chance on the new doctor as
sured me they needed no advice
about diet, for Dr. Harvey (we'll
call him) had already warned
them to eliminate starches , . .
I inferred that Harvey was one
of the old established physicians
in the community. "What I need
is a good tonic, Mr. Brady," they
explained and if I betrayed any
reluctance about giving 'em the
tonic they'd back right out and
make a bee-line across the street
to Kecler's drugstore where they
could get it for 50c or less.
What rankled most was the
discovery, which I made later,
that the eminent Dr. Harvey,
who was so radically opposed to
starch in human nutrition, was
not a physician at all. He was an
optician, or maybe an optome
trist. An optician is one who is
technically skilled in. optics or
one who makes or grinds lenses
and fits spectacles which your
oculist has prescribed.
An oculist or ophthalmologist
a physician who limits his
practice to diseases or defects of
the eyes or vision.
It would be a simple matter to
decide whether to go to an ocu
list or an optician for an eye test
or measurement of vision. If one
were sure the impairment of vi
sion were not a symptom or sign
of some trouble in the arteries,
the kidneys or the nervous sys
tem, probably an optician could
measure the vision and fit the
necessary spectacles or eye-

But nowadays there is still a
third person in the picture,
namely the optometrist. An op-
Inmctrict i nn. who examines
the eyes for the purpose of pre-1
scribing glasses or correcting de-
fects of vision.
It was not just that the bird
my early patients called "Doc
tor" Harvey wasn't really a phys
ician nor that those same cred
ulous creatures called me "Mis
ter." It was that the fellow called
himself J. Philander Harvey,
N.D. What N.D. stood for, I nev
er learned there was not then
and is not now any such degree.
But evidently it meant as much
to the store's prospective custo
mers Harvey has his office in
a store as M.D. meant to them
or means to plenty of citizens to
day. When I was young and in my
prime I went to an oculist every
time I wanted new glasses. I pre
ferred to have my vision meas
ured under drops. I'd advise any
one under 45 years of age to do
so. But I believe an optician or
an optometrist can. measure the
vision without drops accurately
enough for any one past forty-

Ma'am. I said "most individuals of 65
