A woman in Phoenix wanted

foods.
All Prices Increased
Officials who compile the La
bor Department's cost-of-living
index said every one of the 26
items in its sample $10 pre-
World War II market basket has
risen in price.
Here are examples of the dif
ference in retail food prices now
and just before World War II '
and the Korean war:
Flour 10 pounds cost 36
cents in 1939, 98 cents in June,
1950, and $1.15 Monday: sugar
five pounds cost 26 cents in
1939, 47 cents in 1950 and 51
cents now; rib roast 29 cents
a pound in 1939, 76 cents In
1950, and 86.4 cents now.
Times Change
Here's what $10 would put in
a market basket in August, 1939;
Ten pounds of flour, five
pounds of sugar, 15 pounds of
potatoes, two loaves of bread,
seven quarts of milk, a six
pound rib roast, two pounds of
bacon, two pounds of butter, one
package of rolled oats, two doz
en oranges, two dozen eggs, one
pound of coffee, five pounds' of
cabbage, three pounds of green
beans, two pounds of veal cut
let, two pounds of pork chops,
one can salmon, three pounds
of onions, three pounds of ap
ples, two cans tomatoes, two
bunches carrots, one head let
tuce, one can peaches, one box
dried prunes, two cans peas and
one pound of cheese.
In June, 1950, the '$10 only
bought the first eight items on
the list. Now, it goes only as far
as the first six items.
Some Accidents
In Oregon Seem
Without Reason
Salem (U.R) There must
be a feeling of futility among ac
cident analysts as they sort
through more than 74,000 traf
fic accidents occurring each year
in Oregon, according to traffic
safety division.
Some of the accidents seem
without reason.
An accident report received
recently by the division said the
mishap occurred when a c a r
missed a turn on the highway.
The driver said: "I must have
had a flat tire." Police investi
gation showed all four tires still
inflated after the mishap.
Driving Fast
Further checking showed that
the curve the driver missed was
a 60 degree turn, and two pass
engers said the driver had It up
to 70 miles an hour.
One driver failed to signal
for a left turn and pulled direct
ly into another car. He said he
didn't signal because "I didn't
want to roll down my window."
Eugene j(U.R) Firemen said
ivionaay aamage may run as
high as $60,000 from a blaze
which destroyed the Star Furni
ture company early Sunday.

N Dispelling the
Shadow of "Doiibf?
Like doubting Thomas,
mankind largely remains
incredulous that Jesus' heal
ing work was the Action of
divine law, and doubts that
prayer can heal today.
This doubt can now be
honestly dispelled. To any
sincere seeker there is proof,
ample, abundant, and at
band, that the law of God is
still available for humanity's
need. The Christian Science
textbook
Science and
Health with
Key to the Scriptures
by Mary Baker Eddy
shows plainly that God's
healing, helping power
exists. It shows how it is
ever available to anyone
e who understands the same
. truth Jesus knew, which
he directly promised would
"make us free."
This great book shows
how to find for ontulf this
spiritual understanding.and .
how to put it to the test in
daily life.
As one gains this price
less knowledge of the
Christ, health and happi
ness ascend to the realm of
unshakable certainty.
