145 Missionaries Being
Held in Communist China

Kong have revealed that 145
missionaries from 13 countries
ave now in jail or under deten
tion in Communist China.
1 The charges include every
thing from manslaughter, in the
case of several nuns who ran
orphanages, to "counter revolu
tionary" activities. The charges
extend to missionaries who have
opposed the Communist-sponsored
: "reform church" movement
or have continued to organize
aotive chapters of the "Legion
of Mary" a lay organization
which has been banner by the
government.

beer drinking last year but they
still guzzled more of the amber
brew than any other group of
citizens.
That's the report of the Am
erican Brewer Magazine, which
keeps track of such things.
For every man, woman and
child in Wisconsin, 26.5 gallons
were consumed in 1951, accord
ing to the magazine's statistics.
Of course, there weren't many
children drinking beer in the
Badger State, so the total for
some of the adults must have
crept up to astronomical pro
portions. Nationally, the amount of beer
consumed by each individual de
creased from an even 17 gallons
in 1950 to 16.6 gallons last year.
Standing Still Saves

himself a probable trip to the
penitentiary by Just standing
still.
Perales was arrested for vio
lating a two-year suspended sen
tence by failing a get a job and
hanging around taverns. He was
being transferred to county jail
with another prisoner when the
other man made a break for
freedom.
While deputies chased and
captured the fugitive, Perales
waited in front of the court
house until they returned. The
judge decided not to revoke the
sentence suspension.

aries represent 25 religious con
gregations. The Jesuits, who
have the largest personnel of
any religious congregation in
China with 217 priests, 31 bro
thers and 25 scholastics, have
18 of their members behind
Communist bars. ,
Thirty-one of the remaining
i4 iranciscan priests are im
prisoned and the Society of the
Divine Word has 29 of its 125
priests and brothers under ar
rest.
Only a few of the 145 have
received trials or prison "sen
tences." They have simply been
removed by the police from their
residences and thrown into jail.
Of many no news has been re
ceived since their arrest. Some
have now been held for more
than a year.
Narrow Escapes Don't

Two narrow escapes haven't
doused the enthusiam of Lewis
Kearney, 63-year-old Negro, for
his job of well-blasting.
Kearney, recovering in a hos
pital after a fall 40 feet down a
well shaft with a stick of dyna
mite in his pocket told about an
even narrower escape.
He had just place three sticks
of dynamite in the bottom of a
well, lit the fuses and signaled
on a rope for his assistants to
pull him up. About half way up
the rope slipped off the wind
lass.
"I could hear them running
away," Kearney said. " What
did I do? I just snipped the ends
off those fuses with about an
inch to spare and waited for
those boys to come back,"

years a plant brought by a
friend back from Florida, Mrs.
Borders said she has harvested
three "hands" of bananas, eight
bananas to each hand."
Friends told her the plant
would die and she thought so too
when the weather cooled. She
dug the little plant up, wrapped
it in blankets and "stored it for
the winter." The next spring
she transplanted it and it's not
so little any more.

a good six or seven feet high
and the fruit is about four inches
long and perfectly formed, she
