Father John Cummisky was
called upon to offer a few re
marks at a recent quiz class
conducted on Friday evenings
each month by the Knights of
Columbus. He emphasized the
dual relationship of religious ex
ercises at the camp with both
Catholic and Protestant chap
lains serving their respective
constituencies, each using the
same chapel at different hours.
"We work both sides of the
street at Camp White," was his
direct way of explaining the
situation.
Then in all public gatherings
where a chaplain officiates, both
Father Cummisky and the Rev.
Henry Anderson are present for
their special part of th cere
mony. This is in accordance with
VA practice.
All of which is an Important
consideration as It bears upon
the problem of returning the vet
erans to the life of the commu
nity. Oregon, along with other
frontier states, has a strong un
dercurrent of religious feeling
stemming from the missionary
spirit and the evangelistic move
ment together with the tradi
tional American belief in toler
ance resulting from precedents
which induced so many to seek
freedom In the New World.
And at no time is there any
coercion to attend the exercises
but the chapel and recreation
hall are always well patronized
by the membership In the vari
ous devotions. '
The enthusiasm with which
this work is carried on is shown
In the large number of churches
of the vicinity cooperating in ap
pearing on Sunday evenings and
at other times to conduct serv
ices. A list of 31 denominational
groups was furnished by Chap
lain Anderson, under whose aus
pices these Visitation programs
are arranged.

It is significant in connection
with this effort that the Protest
ant membership at Camp White
covers 20 denominations. A re
ligious film is presented once a
month which is viewed with in
terest by both Catholic and Pro
testant members. Mrs. James
Cech, the organist, gives a pic
torial "Flannelgraph" presenta
tion of Bible stories, each month.
As is the practice in ' Domi
ciliary Centers, home members
are employed in responsible po
sitions serving under supervi
sion of the civil service appoint
ees. It is this way in the chapel
where Frank T. Rhinehart per
forms his duties as clerk to the
chaplains. He had been a clerk
in the Army.
But the interesting thing about
Frank is his further qualifica
tion as a school teacher. He
taught in high school and junior
college in his home state of North
Carolina for 25 years. And this
understanding of personalities
and facility in dealing with men
who are still boys at heart, is a
great asset in the position he
holds.
Rhinehart is married and has
five children. (One boy is now
serving in Korea and his wife
expects soon to visit him there.)
He has heart ailment, which is
a considerable handicap! but no
one would ever suspect his(dis-
aointy irom nis always aiiaDie
manner.
Part of his trouble stems, no
doubt, from a back injury sus
tained in a bus accident in Wash
ington state in 1949. He was in
a state of coma for some time
after this catastrophe. He has
held his post here for the past
18 months and is devoted to
Chaplains Anderson and Cum
misky.

tics. He has some tips on how
you may save your own life dur
ing a storm. He says that each
year lightning kills or injures
about 2,000 persons. It also
destroys $130,000,000 worth of
property and kindles 36,000
fires. Auck says that despite
this ever present danger, most
people know little about light
ning. . "Not long ago, a farm couple
in Iowa was nearly frightened
to death by a freak type of light
ning," he says.
Yellow Ball Seen
"They were sitting in the par
lor when suddenly a ball of yel
low fire about the size of a
baseball shot out of the dining
room, swept around them and
disappeared up the fireplace. It
left an acrid odor behind it. The
couple thought the end had come
for sure. Auck says they didn't
dream up the story they told la
ter, but adds that they shouldn't
have been too alarmed. It -was
merely a weird type of lightning
and among the least dangerous
of the types that exist,"
Precautions Told
To avoid trouble, possible in
jury and loss of property, he
says, you can take a few pre
cautions. Proper lightning rod
installation is the best protec
tion. Auck lists some rules you
might follow when lightning is
in the vicinity.
Avoid open fields. If you are
caught by a surprise thunder
storm on a picnic or golf course,
take shelter in a low building.
If none is handy, you will be
safer lying flat on the ground.

Two new fans of different
types, one of them capable of
ventilating a small mine, have
been added to the laboratory
equipment of the mining and
metallurgy department at Illi
nois. The fan delivers up to 30,
000 cubic feet of air a minute.
It is an axial flow fan, oper
ating in the manner of a kitchen
ventilator or summer cooling fan.
The other is a centrifugal type,
operating on the same principle

ing to cut a swath among the
little stars above the western
horizon.
The Sickle is easily traced.
To the right of Regulus, a faint
er star completes the straight
handle. Then curving upward,
northward and finally down
ward, four stars complete the
figure. The star at the sharp
point of this sickle is usually
pictured in the forehead of our
celestial Lion. The curve of stars
run through his head and neck,
with Regulus on his chest.
Smaller stars complete his front
legs.
Rest of Lion Visible
But no lion is complete with
only head, neck and front legs.
Somewhat higher and toward
the east, we find the prominent
triangle of three stars. The most
eastern and brightest of these
three stars is Dcnebola, in the
lion's tail. The other two are
in his hips and extend toward
some fainter stars which trace
the hind leg. With some imag
ination one now sees a complete
' king of beasts."
Leo is found pictured on the
records of many ancient peo
ples. Some used to compare the
strength of the Lion with the
fierce heat of the summer sun.
According to the Greek myth
ology, he was the ferocious beast
killed In the forest of Namaea
by Hercules. So terrible was the
conflict that Jupiter considered
the Lion worthy of immortality,
and placed him among the stars,
Double Stars Found
Regulus is so distant that its
light requires 63 years to reach
us. In the telescope, a rather
faint purple star Is found near
Regulus; and in other parts of
the constellation, interest! ng
nebulae and double stars,
The Leonid meteors, which
several times in the past have
produced splendid showers in
November, seem to radiate out
wards from a location Inside the
Sickle of Leo; hence the name.
Clumsy Burglar Fails
In Robbery Attempt
Peoria, 111. (U.R) A clumsy
burglar was thwarted in his at
tempt to rob a loan company.
The burglar smashed a plate
glass window, then stepped
through the opening. His feet
came down into a large pan of
oil under the window. He slip
ped and plopped Into the oil.
When he fell he also upset a
large fire extinguisher which
went off, dousing him with its
spray. .
Disgusted and wet, the bur
glar beat a hasty retreat through
the window.

Commencement
Held May 28
Talent The 33rd annual com
mencement exercises for 21
graduating seniors were held
May 28 at the Talent high school
with Dr. Roy W. McNeal, pro
fessor of geography at Southern
Oregon college, delivering the
commencement address. .
Dr. McNeal outlined to the
seniors their duties as citizens
in functioning as leaders in
home, church and school life.
The SOC professor charged the
students to grasp life with vigor
and to "joyously launch on track
less seas; fearless of the un
known shores."
Waning Rights"
The speaker warned the large
audience ol the "waning individ
ual rights in government and the
ominous threat of federalization
of public education." Ha cited as
the supreme contribution of the
small high school Its ability to of
fer leadership to many individ
uals who would not be recogniz
ed in a larger school.
Student addresses were given
by Joanne Joanls, class valedic
torian, Marilyn Eagle, class a
lutatorian, and Kenneth Rey
nolds, class president. The Rev,
Leroy L. Nelfert delivered the
invocation and benediction.

Navy Veteran Due '
In San Diego Today
Yeoman Third Class Floyd J.
Holloway, son of Mr. and Mrs,
Floyd R. Holloway, 31 Chestnut
avenue, Medford, is scheduled to
arrive in San Diego, Calif., to-
day aboard the Navy transport
TJSS Wlltsie, according to a Navy
press release.
He has spent nearly eight
months in far eastern waters. His
vessel has steamed more than
50,000 miles in carrying out such
duties as screening escort for a
carrier task force, patrollng with
the 7th fleet, and serving ai
base for four night raids on
Communist-held islands In Won.

Holloway has been recom
mended for the Bronze star, the
Navy said.
He Is a graduate of Phoenix
high school ,and joined the Wllt
sle's crew last September, after
completing a tour of duty in
Alaska. He enlisted In Novem
ber, 1948. Holloway expects to
be discharged the latter part of
October after completing his
four-year tour of Navy duty.
Experiment Teaches
Saving of Resources
Ipswich, Mass. U.R Nearly
300 sixth grade pupils obtained
first hand knowledge of the fun
damentals of the conservation of
natural resources in a new ex
periment in education.
The students, all from the city
of Newton, were brought In
groups of 30 to the Bradley W.
Palmer State Park, where they
spent a week attending lectures
and classes on outdoor living,
conservation and natural science.
The children live In an old
mansion in the park.
The city of Newton aupplies
a cook, nurse and equipment
while the state provides the In
structors In forestry, marine fish
eries and wildlife subjects. Four
student counsellors, two men and
two women, are selected from
Massachusetts colleges for each
trip.
