from Minnesota relatives clip
pings which describe a recent In
vasion of caterpillars in that
state. The clippings, from Brain
crd and Virginia, Minn., papers
described It as "the worst cater
pillar Invasion" In history.

foliage, although crops were not
in great danger since most of
the area affected Is timberland,
according to the stories. Trains
were halted and cars skidded. At
least one engineer, however,
"conquered" the little worms
after his train had slid to a stop.

THE HARDEST WATER IS SOFTER THAN MILK

One out of every 022 letters
from readers is a query concern
ing the effects of drinking hard
water.
Hardness in
drinking water
is due to pres
ence of calcium
and magnesi
ium salts. The
degree of hard
ness of water
is measured or
recorded in
parts per mil
lion or grains
per gallon of calcium carbonate.
If the water contains less than SO
parts per million of hardness it is
considered soft. If it contains
I more than 100 parts per million
it is hard; more than ISO parts
of hardness per million is very
hard.
Hardness of water is of two
kinds, called carbonate or tempo
rary hardness and noncarbonate
or permanent hardness.
Temporary (hardness means
that boiling, which drives off
carbon dioxide, causes most of
the bicarbonates to be precipi
tated, leaving the water softer.
Permanent hardness is the
part of total hardness made up
of sulphates, nitrates and chlor
ides of calcium and magnesium.
Sometimes it is called noncar
bonate hardness. Permanent be
cause the salts that compose it
can't be precipitated by boiling.
Permanent hardness, however,
contributes to formation of
scale in boilers.
To the best of our present
knowledge or, If It Is presump
tuous to use the first personal
pronoun, say medical and health
authorities calcium and other
salts in the water are not ab
sorbed and so it doesn't matter
how hard the water may be, so
far as its potability is concerned.
If the taste is satisfactory the
hardness or softness of the water
is immaterial.
Any one who imagines the cal
cium (lime) in water that is at
all hard may be "deposited" In
the arteries, kidneys or joints if
one continues long enough using
the water as drinking water may
find this fact reassuring:
There is more lime in a glass
of milk than In a gallon of hard
water. The lime (calcium) In
milk, however, is absorbed, as
similated and used by the body
and Indeed milk is the best
source of food calcium for the
body, which requires not less
than 10 to IS grains of calcium
dally for maintaining health and
functional efficiency. '
Rain water, snow water or dis
tilled water is as wholesome or
healthful to drink as tap water,
well water or spring water, if
you have to drink it or prefer to
drink It.
I do not hold with the notion
that everybody should drink not
less than so many glasses of water
every day. It would take a better
doctor or health expert than I
am to make me drink a thimble
ful of water I didn't want. I be
lieve my own metabolism and
natural thirst tells me how much
water to dirnk.

'Ball of Fire' Seen
Flying Over Seattle
Seattle U.R) A bluish white
"ball of fire" streaked across the
sky north of Seattle early Fri
day and exploded in a shower of
sparks that turned night into
day for three or four seconds.
The object was believed to
have been a meteor. Reports lik
ened it to the fiery object that
rumbled across the sky directly
over Seattle May 11.
State Patrolman Ned ' Ray
mond, who was in the vicinity
of Lynwood, 20 miles north of
Seattle, said he saw a "bluish
white ball of fire" at 12:36 a.m.
(PDT) and it seemed to explode
in the vicinity of Port Townsend
on the Olympic peninsula, 35
miles northwest of here.
