    Nicky de Place
Wins Grand Prize
For Stamp Show
Nicky de Place won the grand
award at the show of Junior "Y"
Stamp club held last Saturday
at the YMCA. Judges of the
show yave the boy the grand
award for his Scouts of the
World stamp display. The win
ner is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Eric
de Place, 1392 Poplar drive.
Judges were Mrs. R. E. Car
ley, Sams Valley, president of
Southern Oregon Stamp club,
Floyd C. Crosslin, Ashland,
treasurer of the club, and Mrs
R. L. Herbert, Medford, member
of the club.
.Ribbons were awarded in sev
eral divisions. Mary Lee de Place
took first for her sheet of Unit
ed States stamps, Nicky de Place
took second in this division and
Tommy White, third. For sheets
of foreign stamps John de Place
took first place for his Japanese
stamps, Mary Lee de Place sec
ond for Australian stamps and
Phil Morgan third for a display
of French stamps.
Nicky de Place was awarded
first in the topical division for
the Scouts of the World entry,
Mary Lee de Place was second
for an entry entitled Famous
Women and John Pierce third
for his entry. World Zoo.
In the air mail division Wil
lard Anderson was first, Sue
Donna Doolen was second and
Phil Morgan, third. Dan Chris-
tianson won first place for his
entry in the covers division,
. which was United States stamps,
and Mary Lee de Place was sec
ond with a Danish entry.
Nicky de Place's award was
special certificate, a world stamp
man and a merchandise oraer,
Prizes were provided by Sims
Brothers and Wade Harmon,
tamD dealers.
Phil Murphy received a prize
for the best attendance lat meet
ings of the club this last season,
Eddie Albright, president of the
club, was prevented from at
tending the show because ol a
broken arm.
The club will not meet during
the summer months, but will re
sume sessions October 4 at the
YMCA building.
Following the show refresh
ments were served. Clyde Smith,
club leader, was presented a
birthday cake and a gift from
the club members.
Local Elks To Attend
Convention in Eugene
Approximately 20 members of
the Medford Elks club, and their
wives, are expected to attend
the 1952 state Elks convention
in Eugene during the coming
week, according to Ernest Scott,
secretary. The convention i s
scheduled for June 6, 7 and 8.
V. Aubrey N orris, exalted
ruler of the Medford lodge, and
other local officers are delegates
to the convention. In addition,
Joe Fliegel is chairman of the
1 1 a t e resolutions committee,
Franklin Van Pelt is chairman
of the state ritualistic contest
committee and Scott is secre
tary of the State Elks associa
tion .
In addition to attending the
state meeting, several members
of the Medford lodge plan to
attend the opening of a new
Elks lodge at Florence prior to
the start of the convention.

Pythian Sisters Plan
Meeting and Picnic
Two meetings are scheduled
for Pythian Sister groups this
week.
Pythian Sisters lodge will hold
the regular meeting Tuesday,
May 27, at 8 p.m. at the Pythian
Building.
Past Chiefs' of Pythian Sisters
will meet at Jackson Hot springs
Wednesday, May 28, at 1 p.m.
Each member is asked to take a
sack lunch and coffee.
The Bow B e 1 Is chapter,
Daughters of the British Empire,
will hear a dramatic reading of
"Like Two White Birds," done
by Mrs. Ruby Rusque, during a
meeting Wednesday, June 7 at 8
p.m. in the Girls Community
club. '
Mrs. H. E. Marsh and Mrs.
A. G. McMillin will be hostesses.

Eighteen Students At Griffin Creek Graduated
Eighteen students graduating
from the eighth grade at Griffin
Creek school were presented
diplomas at exercises held at the
school Tuesday evening. Presen
tation of the diplomas was made
by Ray Guches, chairman of the
school board and among those
he presented was one to his
youngest son, Robert.
Scholastic honors for top
grades in the graduating class
announced during the program
by Mrs. Myrna Frink, principal
of the school, were won by Nel
lie Rawlings, Glenna Knorr,
Ruth Gillisple and Joan Wick.
The program opened with the
processional march played by
Robert Bright at the piano, Rob
ert Allen, violin and Edward
Root, flute. Each member of the
graduating class then gave his
name and a short history of the
attendance at the school. Four
students, Ronald Muir, Marilyn
Gemaehlich, Paul Nelson and
Robert Giuches had attended the
school all eight years, it was an
nounced
Musical numbers presented by
members of the graduating class
included a piano solo by Glenna
Knorr, a clarinet and cornet duet
by Joan and Janet Wick and a
clarinet solo by Nellie Rawlings.
The combined seventh and
eighth grade chorus sang the
"Oregon State Song" and "Halls
of Ivy" and the eighth grade
girls chorus sang "Wheel of For
tune." The seventh grade class
dedicated the song "May the
Good Lord Bless and Keep You"
to the graduating class.
Presentation of a gift from the
eighth grade, class to the school
was made by Nellie Rawlings
who has been editor of the
school paper the "Griffin Creek
Gopher."
Gifts of appreciation were pre
sented to the teachers and school
staff by Griffin Creek Mothers'
club and the program concluded
with refreshments served by the
mothers' club.
The school gymnasium had

been decorated for the occasion
by a seventh grade committee
including Mildred Weaver, Pa
tricia Johnston, Evaloy Bates
and Lois Kelley.
Members of the graduating
class include Myrna Adams, Eve
lyn Davidson, Marcia Davis,
Marilyn Gemaehlich, Ruth Gil
lispie, Robert Guches, Glenna
Knorr, Jerry McKenney, Mary
McQuigg, Ronald- Muir, Paul
Nelson, Charlene Rasor, Nellie
Rawlings, Betty Vance, Janet
and Joan Wick, Ralph Wier and
Loren Fleming.
Wednesday evening the grad
uating class members were
guests of honor at a square dance
and party given for them by
members of the seventh grade
and the Mothers' club.
Book Club
Contemporary Book club will
meet Wednesday at 1::4S p.m. at
the home of Mrs. Allen R. Smith,
102 Black Oak drive. Mrs. E. P.
Vilas will give the program.
