to season, year to year and
youth to senility. The bones
are the storehouse for calchlrri
and the calcium reserve in the
bones is drawn on to keep the
blood calcium at a pretty con
stant level of between 9 and
11.5 milligrams per 100 cc; just
as the liver is the storehouse
for glycogen (animal starch),
blood suger, and this fuel re
serve is drawn on to keep the
blood sugar at a constant level
of between 7 milligrams per
100 cc. (fasting) and 12 milli
grams per 100 cc. (After full
meal.) ' .
There may be some explan
ation for the popular belief that
valetudinarians, partic u 1 a r 1 y
those with chronic rheumatiz,
can prognosticate change o f
weather because they "feel it
in their bones." Let's leave the
explanation to wiser doctors,
and for Pete's sake don't try to
twist this allusion into an ad
mission that weather has any
thing to do with the rheuma
tiz. Can't a fellow indulge in
a bit of whimsy without rever
ting with you to the nineteen
century?
It might be a blessing if per
sons training for chronic rheu
matiz could always feel it the
calcium deficiency, that is in
their bones and know just what
they feel. Perhaps that would
make them a little more con
scious of the importance of an
adequate daily Intake of cal
cium to maintain vite and pre
vent rheumatiz and many other
common ailments.
Lest some laymen and doc
tors surmise that I'm express
ing merely my own theories a
bout calcium I quote from The
Patient Past Fifty, by Ernest
P. Boas, M.D. (Year Book Pub
lishers): "As u result (of inadequate
diet) adults experience a steady
long-continued loss of calcium
through the years. This does not
become superficially manifest

"The average American diet
is grossly insufficient in cal
cium, and it is quite probable
that this calcium lack accen
tuated by the passage of years
leads to the demineralization of
bones that is so characteristic
of aged persons . . . osteoporosis
. . . fractures occur more read
ily." It may be a little late .to do
anything about this deminerali
zation process if it has been go
ing on twenty or thiry years
without concern on your part,
but it will do no harm to learn
more about it by reading the
booklet The Calcium Shortage,
