Park Naturalist
Tells VA Members
Of Park Sidelii
Camp White Sidelights on
national parks throughout the
world were related in a talk
by Dr. George C. Ruhle, natur
alist at Crater Lake National
park, before a meeting of dom
iciliary members this week, un
der the sponsorship of the Am
erican Red Cross.
Dr. Ruhle, who was in the
Navy during the war, comment
ed on differences between na
tional park operations and facil
ities in Switzerland, Sweden,
South America and South Africa
and brought out problems in
handling the wild life as well as
the tourists.
Farewell Talk
It was in this nature of a fare
well review, since Dr. Ruhle
will leave June 8 for Hawaii
where he is to become the nat
uralist of the national park
there. He has been with the
National Park service since 1941.
"In Switzerland," he said, "the
national parks are scientific lab
oratories. Here they are main
tained for the public. In Sweden
where there are 14 national
parks, four inside the Arctic
circle, the people run the parks
for themselves.
"The most popular animal in
our parks is the bear. They are
comical and children love them,
but they are wild animals none
the less. Bears are all right
until lured in to becoming pals
of humans," he said.
One of the most dificult prob
lems for the naturalist, he em
phasized, is to know how to
handle the predatory instinct of
wild life. Experience with lynx
preying upon game grouse has
shown that there is a delicate
balance in nature that is main
tained by this instinct.
Started in 1870
In 1870, he declared, the Na
tional parks were born through
the acquisition by the federal
government of Yellowstone Na
tional park at the behest of a
group of Montana explorers who
discovered the geysers. Today
there are 27 parks in the chain
Dr. Ruhle told something of
the story of the big trees In
California and Crater lake in
Oregon, which he described as a
phenomenon produced in the last
act of the volcanic eruptions at
one time prevalent in this reg
ion. The 12,000 foot mountain
