Rogue River Mr. and Mrs. I River recently on business. Mrs.
Rogue River Mr. and Mrs.
Lloyd Smith returned recently
from Fortuna, Calif., where they
visited their daughter, Mrs. Wil
liam Baker and family.
Mrs. Harry Rose is expected
home soon, driving a new car
which she went to Detroit to
purchase. On the trip she will
visit a sister in Iowa, her son
Lee Miner and family In San Di
ego and another son, Homer Mi
ner and family in Los Angeles.
Mr. and Mrs. Neil Thompson
have moved from Gendale to
Grants Pass. Neil owns and op
erates a barber shop in Glen
dale. They and two children
were dinner guests Sunday
night at the Richard Scotts here.
Mrs. Herbert Harwood of Eu
gene arrived here Tuesday and
spent a few days visiting her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Whip
ple. On Friday Mrs. Melvin
Whipple of Eugene motored to
Rogue River and Mrs. Harwood
returned home with her.
Jim Whipple was honored on
his birthday with three dinners.
On May 14 Mrs. Whipple en
tertained with a dinner in hon
or of Mrs. Harry Rose and Mr.
Whipple, whose birthdays are
close together. Mr. Rose was a
guest also. Other guests who
dropped in during the evening
were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hughes,
Mrs. Walter Carroll and Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Blackmar of San
Jose. On May 18, Mr. and Mrs.
Whipple were dinner guests of
Mr. and Mrs. John Breeding and
on Mr. Whipple's birthday, May
21, he was the honored guest at
a dinner given by Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Scott. Guests present
were Mr, and Mrs. Fred Deng
ler, Mrs. Alice Harwood of Eu
gene, Mr. and Mrs. James Whip
ple and the hosts, Mr. and Mrs.
Scott. The evening was spent
playing canasta.
Philip Carlyle and wife of Los
Angeles spent a week in Rogue
Lumber Mill Buildings
Destroyed by Flames
Vancouver, Wash. (U.R)
Fire of undetermined origin
Tuesday destroyed two buildings
of the Clark County Lumber
company here. Damage was esti
mated at $185,000.
A night watchman spotted the
fire about 5:15 a, m. in the re
saw building. The flames spread
to the dry storage shed where a
large quantity of lumber was
destroyed.
Ex-Pilot Is Missionary
Detroit (U.R) Christopher
K. Salno, former Navy pilot,
who was nearly killed when a
Kamikaze plane attacked his
carrier during World war II, re
turned to Japan as a missionary
priest of the Maryknoll Fathers.

denly at the home of her son in
Los Angeles a month ago, while
on a visit there.
Mrs. William Trotter returned
recently from a few weeks visit
with her sister, Mrs. Marjorie
Drake at Santa Monica, Calif.
Mr. and Mrs. Grant Powell of
Murphy and Mr. and Mrs. John
Breeding enjoyed two days of
picnicking recently one day on
Sardine creek and one day up
near Talent.
Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Green, who
recently built a new home on
Cedar street have moved into it.
Recent visitors at the James
Whipple home were Melvin
Whipple Sr. of Eugene and his
son, Melvin Jr. of Chicago. Mel
vin Jr. had not been to Rogue
River since a small child and
saw many changes here.
