Antibiotics useful
Dogs and cats are liable to
about anything that can happen
to a human being in the way of
illness. They are subject to pneu
monia, arthritis, cancer, heart
disease and putritional defic
iency disorders.
As in human medicine, the
most important recent advance
in medicine for pets has been
the discovery of antibiotics.
Penicillin, of coure, was the
first antibiotic to come into use.
It is still widely employed In
pneumonia, ear infections,
wound infections, abscesses and
the like. The newer antibiotics
are likewise in wide use, espec
ially the broadrange antibiotics
terramycin, aureomycln and
Chloromycetin. Terramycin is
one of the most recent additions
to the pet doctors' armamentar
ium. Animal Vaccines
Vaccines have been used for
many years to prevent distemp
er and rabies. Recently, scien
tists at the Hooper Foundation
of the University of California
developed a vaccine to Immun
ize dogs against Stuttgart dog
plague, a serious dog disease,
which as Weil's disease is a con
siderable threat t o human
health.
Hormones are employed to
correct glandular disorders In
pets. Though it will not put
new hair on bald humans, the
male hormone testosterone will
renew the coats of male dogs.
