Firemen's Convention Opening
Sessions Slated Here Tomorrow
The lirst of some 400 Ore
gon firemen and fire chiefs and
Pacific Coast fire department
equipment dealers will start reg
istering here tomorrow at 8 a.
m. for the annual convention of
the Oregon Fire Chiefs' associa
tion and the Oregon Rural Fire
Protection Districts association.
Convention and registration
headquarters for the joint con
vention will be the Jackson ho
tel. The first meeting will be call
ed to order at 9:30 a. m. in the
Holly theater, where all general
sessions will be held. Bend Fire
Chief LeRoy Fox, president of
the Fire Chiefs' association, will
preside.
Mayor To Speak
The invocation will be pre
aented by the Rev. George R. V.
Bolster, rector of the Medford
Episcopal church. Medford May
or D. L. Flynn will give the ad
dress of welcome and the re
sponse will be presented by Wil
liam Roble, chief of the Salem
tire department.
Highlighting the first session
will be talks by Gov. Douglas
McKay, Stale Fire Marshal R. B.
Taylof, and Jack A. Hayes, state
director of civil defense.

Ivan Pearson of McMinnville,
Loren Bush, chief engineer of
the Board of Fire Underwriters
of the Pacific. San Francisco;

Association "old timers" will
hold a luncheon at noon in the
Medford hotel and Medford de
partment "old timers" will meet
at noon at the west side fire sta
tion, Eighth and Lincoln streets.
During the afternoon the
chiefs association will conduct
competitive drills and will hear
a talk by Lewis F. Shaw, sec
retary of the Oregon Petroleum
industry. A banquet is scheduled
at 7 p. m. in the basement of
the Medford Elks club with El
mo N. Stevenson, president of
Southern Oregon college, as
main speaker.

Speakers before the Rural Dis
trict association Tuesday will in

E. A. Taylor, Chief deputy of
the state fire marshal's office,

rural fire district problems will

A ladies program has been
scheduled for the three days.
It includes tours of Lithia park
in Ashland, a tour of the Rogue
valley and a tour of Jackson
ville and the House of Mystery
and luncheon each day.
The convention is the first
held in Medford by the Fire
Chiefs association since 193S and
the first Joint convention with
the Rural Fire Districts assoc
iation. Members of the Medford fire
department who have taken a
leading part in preparing the
program include Chief Gordon
Barker, general chairman; Capt.
Wesley Coleman, registration;
Capt. Earl Harrison, competitive
drills; Capt. George Shreeve, ex
hibit booths; LeRoy Williams,
decorations; Dale Davis, enter
tainment, and Truman Nelson,
hospitality. Others include Mrs.
Truman Nelson, ladies program;
Al Moulton, courtesy cars, and
Don Lane, secretary-manager of
the Jackson County Chamber of
Commerce, housing.

Big, Old Black Oak
Tree Felled Here
A black oak tree, so large and
so situated that it took 2Vj days
to cut it down, was removed last
week from 722 North Riverside
avenue. Rings of the tree, which
had four trunks at the base and
then fused into one, indicate that
the tree, is Just under 100 years
old.
The rings vary in width, with
some about twice as wide as oth
ers, which according to the tree
fallers, shows that some years
were twice as dry as the others.
The tree measured eight feet in
width and was estimated at 90
feet in height.
In addition to the 2Vi days
used in cutting down the tree.

Road Open To travel
The road into Oregon Switz
erland, located nine miles east
of Medford via the Roxy Ann
road, is now open to travel, ac
cording to W. Schmidt, proprie
tor. The road has been closed
since November.
Schmidt extended an invita
tion to the public to visit the
area and "enjoy the splendid
view of the valley and the Cas
cade mountain range."

Jacksonville 'Phone
Switchover Tomorrow
The change-over to dial tele
phone operation in Jacksonville,
which will also permit Medford
and Jacksonville telephone
users to dial each other directly
without a long-distance charge,
will go into effect at 12:30 p.m.
Monday, a half-hour past noon.
The change will give Jackson
ville subscribers five-digit num
bers, according to J. H. Creager,
manager of the Medford ex
change of the Pacific Telephone
and Telegraph company.
Directory Distributed
A special telephone supple
mental directory, already distri
buted in both Medford and Jack
sonville, contains the new Jack
sonville numbers, and instruc
tions for making inter-city calls.
Creager yesterday urged cus
tomers to check listings, as well
as dialing instructions on the in
formation page of the directory,
before making calls.
Although several months of
planning and preliminary work
were needed to ready the new
system for operation, Creager
said the actual "cut-over" is ex
pected to be completed in a mat
ter of moments and with virtual
ly no interruption of service.

A vacation Bible school par
ade, which will be a prelude to
most of the two-weeks sessions
to be conducted by Medford
churches, will be held here Sat
urday, June 7, at 2 p.m.
Participants will be children
from the various Medford chur
ches. There will be bicycles,
floats and banners in the par
ade. Line of march will be from
Hawthorne park to Civic Center
park on West Main street.
Representatives of the church

29, at 8 p.m. in the employment
office in the Holland hotel to
complete parade plans.

Flights to Resume
United Air lines, on Monday
morning, May 28, will resume
operation of all DC3 Mainliner
flights west of Salt Lake City
which were temporarily sus
pended May 12, it was announc
ed Saturday by Walter Carson,
local UAL manager.
The action follows lifting of
the defense petroleum restric
tions on 91 octane gasoline, of
the type regularly used by the
company's DC3 Mainliners in
the western region.
The company's move gives all
intermediate stations in the west
normal DC3 mail, passenger and
cargo service, Carson said. At
the same time, he added, UAL is

Mill Fire Damage Set
At $50,000 in Albany

Glen Lumber Co. mill here was
destroyed by fire Friday. The
loss was estimated at $50,000.
The mill was owned by Floyd
Hopeman who had just bought
it two months ago. Firemen said
the blaze started in the head
