Chairman Explains
Poppy Fund Uses;
Sale To Continue
Dimes, quarters and dollars
dropped into the Poppy Day
contribution boxes of the Am
erican Legion auxiliary today
and tomorrow in exchange for
the memorial poppies to be worn
next Saturday in honor of the
war dead, will bring their full
value of help to disabled veter
ans and needy children of vet
erans during the coming year,
said Mrs. H. P. Alford, rehabil
itation chairman of the Med
ford unit of the auxiliary, to
day. "There are no campaign ex
penses to be deducted from the
Poppy Day contributions," she
explained. "All workers are un
paid volunteers, except the dis
abled veterans who make the
poppies. There is no elaborate
publicity or advertising cam
paign, all newspaper space and
radio time being donated. The
materials for making the little
crepe paper flowers cost only
a tiny amount j)er flower.
"Thus practically every pen
ny of the amount dropped into
the contribution boxes will go
into American Legion auxiliary
rehabilitation and child welfare
funds. Most of it will stay right
here in Oregon and will be ex
pended locally to aid war veter
ans and children of veterans
during the coming year. As the
auxiliary's rehabilitation and
child welfare programs are car
ried out by volunteer workers,
there are no administrative costs
to eat into these funds.
