The first application of a pro
gram of medical supervision for
occupational activities began this
week with the transfer of 25
men from Company A to Com
pany 1, where all detail men will
be located.
This follows the policy an
nounced by Manager Paul Hat
ton April 22, covering reclassi
fication of men and assignment
to a new schedule of duties call
ing for a minimum of 20 hours
a week.
A planning board, consisting
of the domiciliary officer, the
chief of social service, and the
executive assistant for physical
medical rehabilitation, is In
charge of the rearrangement.

Frank Rhinehart, clerk to the
domiciliary's chaplains, became
a person of note when he was
born on Feb. 29, 1896. He was
eight years old when he cele
brated his first birthday, owing
to the fact that there was no
leap year in 1900, In accordance
with the Gregorian time sched
ule. This singular circumstance
was published by Ripley in "Be
lieve It or Not." And to make
it more unusual, he is one of
twins.
Richard Smith, of Richmond,
Va., and New York, is the Jackie
Robinson of the Arts and Crafts
team. He is always there in a
pinch, hitting or fielding, to
keep things moving. When some
art work was needed for the
Fair he painted a picture and
won second prize. And if the
machinery needs fixing, Smith
gets a wrench and screw driver
and goes to work.
A subduing note was struck
at the VFW Auxiliary dance
Monday night by the appearance
of the ladies in the long formal
evening dresses. The Camp

Soap Box Derby
Entries Top 100;
Meeting Tonight
The list of entries in the 1952
Rogue Valley Soap Box Derby
has passed the 100 mark, it war
reported today by C. Lyall Fid
ler, chairman of the event. Of
these 68 are from Medford, 25
from Grants Pass and 15 are
from Ashland.
Another meeting of all en
trants, their parents, sponsors,
and those who wish to sponsor
a boy, will be held at the Barnes
Chevrolet company tonight. The
meeting will include a "problem i
clinic " for boys building derby
racers will be held, and there
will be another showing of the
film about the 1951 All-Amer-Ican
Soap Box Derby.

Fidler said that another ship
ment of wheels has arrived, and
boys who have not yet obtained
theirs can pick them up at
Barnes Chevrolet, which is serv
ing as derby headquarters.
A representative of the Shell
Oil company will be at tonight's
meeting to tell about that com
pany's award for the local race,
and about the firm's plans for
cooperation in engineering and
lubrication of models.
Police Sgt. Clyde Fichtner,
president of Chapter 16, Interna
tional Footprint association,
which is another derby sponsor
ing agency, is in charge of prizes
for the Rogue valley race, and
he said that there will be prize
of some sort for every boy enter
ing. Scholarship Grand Prlia
The grand prize for the All
American Derby, to be run at the
Akron. O., Derby Downs in Aug
ust, is a $5,000 scholarship at a
university of the winning boy's
choice. Winner of the Rogue val
ley derby will go directly to the
Akron event from here there is
no regional nor state run-off.
The trip will be all-expense
paid for the boy and one parent.
It was decided in conferences
with Mayor Diamond Flynn this
week that the race here will be
run either on Crown avenue or
East Main street, whichever has
the best per cent grade. The
course will be about 1,000 feet
long, and racing speeds are not
to exceed 30 miles per hour. Two
cars will race in each heat, and
each heat winner will receive a
prize. Merchants and individuals
have been generous in donating
worthwhile prizes, Fidler said.
Man Walks 50,000
To Deliver News

Les Thompson, 55, has walked
50,000 miles and worn out 96
pairs of boots over the last 16
years in bringing the news of
the world to the people of
Clunes, a township near here.
"That's twice around the
world and that's enough for any
man," Thompson said. "Now I'm
going to retire."

day newspapers, Thompson has
walked a newspaper delivery

cal's husband, an Army officer,
is on his way to Korea.
