To Give Shaw Play
Friday, Saturday
Valley theater fans interested
in plays presented "intimate
style" should enjoy the produc
tion of George Bernard Shaw's
"Candida" which is the current
offering of the drama depart
ment of Southern Oregon col
lege. The play, which opened
last Friday and Saturday night,
May 23 and 24, in the library
reading room at the college.
The arena style of staging
which Director Angus Bowmer
is using for "Candida" adds fla
vor to this particular play. Con
sidered possibly the greatest of
Shaw's domestic dramas, the
play gains reality when the ac
tion takes place so close to the
audience. It is almost as if the
scenes were In one's own home
and the actors were family mem
bers. Director Bowmer has a compe
tent cast for the play.
Robert Knott and Nanette
Cuddie give particularly fine
performances. Young Knott as
the ultra-sensitive young poet
Eugene Marchbanks, and Miss
Cuddie as Candida. Robert J
Hilliard, who has appeared In
many of the college plays and
in Shakespearean festival pro
ductions, Is convincing as the
James Mavor Morell, the minis
ter bent on "doing good."
Kay Davis plays Proserpine
Garnett, the secretary; Charles
C. Eliason is cast as the Rev. Al
exander Mill and Stafford G.
Thomas as Mr. Burgess.
Playgoers will find time well
spent on this Shaw drama, so till
ed with keen wit and biting sa
tire. Curtain time is 8:30 p.m. for
both Friday and Saturday. O.S.
