Saturn Ringed Giant

Without doubt many of our
readers have in recent weeks no
ticed, in the southeastern and
southern skies a non-twinkling,
yellow object of considerable
brightness, very close beside
which a tiny, seemingly bluish
star was cuddling and almost
touching. The contrast of color,
more apparent than real, made a
beautiful effect in field glasses.
The proximity of the two is
not as striking now as it was
earlier this month, but is still
quite noticeable. The yellow and
larger member of the pair is the
planet Saturn; the smaller, Por
rima, or Gamma of the constella
tion Virgo.
Striking Object
Saturn is generally considered
the most striking telescopic ob
ject in the sky. The ball of the
planet is surrounded in the plane
of its equator by a beautiful flat
ring on one side of which the
shadow of the globe is cast. One
poet has said:
"While Saturn whirls
His steadfast shade
Sleeps on his luminous ring."
Saturn is doubtless the least
interesting of all the brighter
planets when viewed without
optical aid, but a good telescope
and clear, quiet air change all
this. Observatory attendants are
quite familiar with the expres
sions of wonder and astonish
ment from those obtaining their
first glimpse of this distant

Saturn Appears Large
With a very moderate mag
nification, Saturn appears as
large as does the full moon to
the unaided eye. Most observers
will not believe this unless the
moon is in the same region of
the sky where it can be seen by
one eye along the oulside of the
telescope tube while Saturn is
viewed through the instrument
with the other eye. Then another
surprise is registered.
The planet Itself appears as a
pale yellow, luminous globe,
slightly flattened at the north
and south poles. On this globe
and encircling it there are sev
eral rather indistinct dark bands.
These, arranged both north and

Medford Delegates
To Attend KC Meeting
Two Medford men will repre
sent Rogue River Council 1594,
Knights of Columbus, at the 44th
annual state convention of the
KCs in Salem May 23 to 25, it
was announced Saturday. They
are Frank DeSouza and Paul B.
Newcomb.
The meeting will be one of
the largest ever held by the
Knights of Columbus in Oregon,
according to Jasper Kennedy,
state deputy, and will draw rep
resentation from 34 councils
throughout the state. It is esti

on May 6, was well attended by
members, leaders and visitors.
Mr. Lathrop called for any re
ordering of club T shirts and
caps. Also the club discussed the
possibilities of a dance for 4-H
members as one way to raise
money for the club.
Demonstration for the evening
was how to make a rope halter,
put on by Paul Williams Jr. of
the beef club.
The club decided to sponsor
two members to 4-H summer
school at Corvallis this year.
Entertainment for next meet
ing will be a movie "The Amer
ican Cowboy1 'sponsored by Ford
Motor Co.
