Cheney Studs Launch League
Play Against Sox Saturday

for the Portland Beavers, It
expected to chuck one oi the
games for the Drain Black Sox
when they oppose the Cheney
Studs baseball club here Sat
urday and Sunday.
It was announced at Port
land Thursday that Helser had
voluntarily "hung up his
glove" and retired from the
Beavers to enter an "attractive
business venture at Drain." It
had been reported earlier that
he was seeking hit release
from Portland in order to join
the Black Sox as manager. The
unconditional release, report
edly has not been acted upon.
Helser, who admits that he
is nearing 41. wat doing well
pitching in home series at
Portland. He was not hit hard
and rivals' scores were low.
Word from Drain this morn
ing was that Helser will chuck
in one game and Jerry Cade,
ex-Drain high ace, in the other.
The Drain starting crew will
be Bill Beard, catcher; Tom
Myers, first base; Jack Fas
sett, second base; Ad Ruisch
mann, shortstop; Harvey
Storey, third base; and Ted
Wilson, Wayne Johnson and
Don Kimball, outfielders.

and Jerry Cade. The catchers are

tional and Pacific Coast player,
and Chuck Bafaro.

varsity coach; Ad Rutschmann,
great shortstop prospect; Harvey
Storey ex-Pacific Coast leaguer;
Jack Fassett, Ron Phillips, Ray
Cole and Howard Parks. In the

Titular Shoots
Commence Here
The first rifle shoot of the
Western Open championship (for
merly Tri State) will be held at
the Camp White range Sunday,
May lit, at 8:30 a.m. (standard
time) according to officers of the
Medford Rifle club.
Anyone is invited to enter the
competition which consists of
three matches, one each in May,
June and July.
Any rifle, just so it is safe,
with any sights is permitted. The
competitior can shoot through
the course as many times as he
desires. The best score and tar
gets are sent to the headquarters
in San Francisco.

Medford high school's base
ball crew will tussle Saturday
in at least one game of the
two-out-of-three play-off for a
berth In the state tournament
but the Black Tornado's play
off opponent will not be
known until this evening.
The Tornado, champion of
District No. 6 A-l. will battle
the victor In District No. 6
A-2 starting at 1:15 p.m. at
the Medford senior high field.
