DREAM CRUISE ENDS IN HEAVY SEAS The Coast Guard cutter Ewine flcft) annroaches the
I schooner Eloise, floundering in the Pacific about 2i miles southwest of San Francisco's Golden Gate.
The 86-foot pleasure yacht, with 10 persons aboard, was on a "dream cruise" to the South Seas. After
a five-month cruise, half the Eloise's crew planned to settle in Honolulu. The Ewing took the yacht in
tow and headed back to San Francisco.
Second Major Break
In CIO Lumber Strike
Portland U.R) The second
major break in two days in the
strike of CIO Woodworkers
against the Pacific Northwest
lumber industry was reported
Friday when an agreement was
reached with two more employ
ers groups.
Plywood Makers Settle
The union and the Willamette
Valley Operators association and
the Long-Bell Lumber company
agreed on a recommended settle
ment which could send employ
ees back to their Jobs.
Hells Canyon Dam
Hearings To Resume
Washington U.R) A House
Interior subcommittee will re
sume hearings June 17 on a bill
to authorize Hells Canyon dam
on the Idaho-Oregon border, it
was announced Friday.
The sMbcommittee on Irriga
tion and reclamation suspended
hearings on the bill last month.
The controversial $356,000,000
dam on the Snake river would
be the second highest in the
world and would have an elec
tric generating apacity of 000,
000 kilowatts.
Thursday, the union reached
an agreement with the plywood
and door manufacturers which
will send about 4,500 men back
to work.
The new agreements provide
for a 7'2-cent hourly wage hike,
a two-cent increase in night dif
ferential, three additional paid
holidays and other items.
Union Backs Down
In the settlement with the two
lumber organizations Friday, the
union backed down on its de
mands for an employer-paid
health and welfare program and
settled for an improved pay
check deduction plan. The
health and welfare program was
not an issue in plywood negotia
tions. Willamette valley operators
also agreed to a six-cent hourly
"hoot-owl' 'shift differential, ac
cording to Max Gardner, busi
ness agent of Springfield local
5246 of the union.

May 16. The lecture program
has been planned around Dec
oration day. There will be no
square dance Saturday night be
cause the truckers are having a
dinner at the hall that night.

met May 12 at the Victor Hay
home. The lesson was on cookies
and small cakes. Mrs. Hay show
ed how to make cup cakes. Re

Informed sources said Army
Secretary Frank Pace Jr., is
"hopping mad" about the inci
dent and has ordered a full re
port from the Far East "not in
a few weeks or months, but in
hours or days."
Pace promised to give the Sen
ate Armed Services Committee
a copy of the report as soon as
it reaches the Pentagon.

convening to investigate the incident.
Busy Mountaineers
The Busy Mountaineers met
in the Home Ec room with our
leaders, Mrs. Middlebusher and
Mrs. Goode and seven members
and three visitors present. For
the next meeting, on May 20, we
are to bring scraps of material
to make head scarfs. The needle
cases and pincushions we just
made will be used for the first
time.

Upper Rogue 4-H club will
hold its social meeting at Shady
Cove schoolhouse on Monday,
May 10. The last meeting was
attended by 25 members, five
leaders and six visitors. A movie
was shown.

Einstein Assists
Girl Stumped on
Geometry Problem

bert Einstein, father of the
theory of the relativity and the
world's greatest mathematician,
has come to the aid of a 15-year-old
girl stumped by a plane ;
geometry problem. J

Johanna Mankiewicz, baffled :
by a geometry problem that nei- j
thcr she nor her chums at West
lake school could solve, scrib-!
bled a letter giving details of i
the small fry brain-twister and
mailed it off to Einstein at the
Institute for Advanced Study at
Princeton, N. J.
Back came the answer or
at least a clue to it.
Einstein sent her a diagram
sketched on the back of her let
ter and indicating how to solve
the problem. The sketch was
signed "A. E."
But Einstein shrewdly omit
ted the specific answer.
Details Not Clear

radii 8 inches and 2 inches is?"
The details of Einstein's dia
gram were not altogether clear
to Johanna, but she decided af
ter conferring with friends that
the correct answer must be 8 in
ches.
She also noted that Einstein
had managed to send his reply
via air mail with only a three-
cent stamp.
Former Ashland Man
Earns Service Honor
Dr. Barnard Joy, formerly of
Ashland, Thursday was honored
by the Department of Agricult
ure for his services as assistant
to the administrator of the agri
cultural research administration,
according to a press dispatch
from Washington, D. C, where
the ceremony took place.
Dr. Joy was given a silver
medal for superior service. His
award was one of 87 service
awards presented at a ceremony
by Secretary of Agriculture
Charles Brnnnan, when Presi
dent Truman was the principal
speaker.
The award was In recognition
for Dr. Joy's work in organiz
ing and directing the national
marketing research workshops
held during the past three sum
mers at leading midwestern uni
versities. The award winner is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Albert C. Joy,
now living at Harbor. His bro
ther, Richard Joy, resides in
Ashland. The press dispatch said
his interest in agricultural mat
ters began as a youth in 4-H
work, and continued during his
years at Oregon State college.
