District Meeting
Mariners' Clubs
Set for Sunday
A convention of Mariner'
clubi of southwestern Oregon
will be held In First Presbyte
rian church. Eighth and Holly
streets, Sunday, May 18. About
80 delegates are expected, and
registration is to begin at
3:30 p.m.
The nationally known musi
cian, the Rev. Vernon Wilcox of
Church of the Nazarcne, will
present "Music Hath Charms."
Dinner will be served at 5:30
p.m. with Mrs. William Kerns in
charge of the kitchen, Mrs.
Wayne Carter, tables; Mrs. Wil
son Slater, dining room. Mrs.
Otto Frohnmayer is music chair
man for the event.
Election of district officers for
the coming year will be held.
Further information concerning
the convention may be obtained
from Mr. and Mrs. Joy Swarts
ley, skippers of the local Mari
ners' club.
Meeting Scheduled
For Past Presidents
Past Presidents' club, Veterans
of Foreign Wars' auxiliary in
Medford will meet Saturday,
May 17, at the Girls Community
club for a potluck dinner. It will
be served at 7 p.m.
Officers will be elected during
a business meeting, and cards
will follow.

Heads West side Unit;
To Give Scholarship
Westside Extension unit held
its May meeting at the home of
Mrs. Hanley Heffernan on Ross
lane, with election of officers
held during the meeting.
Mrs. Russell Semon was elect
ed chairman for the next year.
Assisting Mrs. Semon will be
Mrs. Haskell Stout, vice-chairman;
Mrs. Ted Walland, secre
tary; Mrs. Anthony Cappello,
treasurer and Mrs. Harrison
Meyer, librarian.
Following the luncheon, serv
ed to 33 members, Mrs. Meyer
and Mrs. Lewis Conger gave a
demonstration on making belts,
buckles and buttons.
The unit plans to sponsor a 4
an outstanding 4-H student In
the Westside district.

The June meeting will be an
outdoor potluck lunch to be held
in the gardens of the home of
Mrs. Edward Leach. Installation
of officers will take place at the
June meeting.

Veterans of Foreign Wars aux
iliary announced today that the
annual award meeting for essay
winners will be held Tuesday,
May 20, instead of Saturday,
May 17, as originally announced
The meeting will be held in
the VFW hall at 8 p.m.

Duplicate Bridge Cub
Gives Winning Pairs
Medford Duplicate Bridge club
held the weekly session Tues
day, and winners were an
nounced yesterday.
For the north-south playing
position the Paul McDuffees took
first place, Mr. and Mrs. B. L.
Sanderson were second and Mrs.
George Codding and Roy Pruitt
were third.
First place for the east-west
playing position were Marvin
Kahn and Mike Dillon. Two cou
ples tied for second and third
place, the pairs being Jack Barr
and Mrs. Frank Perl, Budd Gail
and Wilbur Hood, Portland.
College To Give
Shaw Play Tonight
Ashland "Candida," popular
comedy by the English play
wright George Bernard Shaw,
will be presented at Southern
Oregon college this evening. The
spring play by the college drama
department will be stf.ged in
arena style in the library build
ing study room at 8:30 o clock.
Angus L. Bowmer, professor
of English, is director of the cast
of six. He said the production
will measure up very well with
the presentation of the same play
offered here several years ago.
"Candida" will be presented
again Saturday evening and
again on May 23 and 24.

night at Girls Community club
Mrs. Vernon Thorpe presided
and Mrs. George Mclnlyre was
toastmistress.
Mrs. White talked on "Toler
ance" and Miss Thatcher on
"Progress in the World of
Books." Mrs. Bernice Kunzman
gave the education talk on
"Speech is Interactive."

To Visit Medford
Mrs. Flora E. Fields, Port
land, department president of
Oregon for United Spanish War
Veterans' auxiliary, will make
her official visit to two auxiliar
ies of southern Oregon at a meet
ing set for Sunday May 18, in
the Redman hall, Medford.
The groups to be visited arc
Colonel Sargent auxiliary, Med
ford, and Rogue River auxiliary,
Grants Pass.
A delegation from the Klam
ath Falls auxiliary and camp is
expected to greet Mrs. Fields.
Mrs. Frank Widner, dinner
committee chairman, is planning
the dinner to be served at 1:15
p.m. in Mrs. Fields' honor.
Mrs. Mildred Tolle, auxiliary
president, named a number of
commit tees for the meeting.
They are Mrs. Don Andrfson,
Mrs. H. W. Barneburg and Mrs.
Rosa Young, decorations and
flowers; Mrs. Barneburg, recep
tion; Mrs. Ralph Atwood and

Proficiency Awards
Ashland Ten secretarial sci
ence students at Southern Ore
gon college have been presented
Gregg shorthand awards for pro
ficiency, according to Veva E.
Wilson, assistant professor of sec
retarial science.
Four members of the advanced
class have achieved a speed of
100 words a minute, Miss Wilson
said. They are Peggy Markham,
Ashland; Charlotte M. Harris,
Talent; Peggy Manson, Grants
Pass; and Arlene Hooker, Great
Falls. Mont.
Students awarded 80-words-a-minute
certificates are Patricia
Bailey and Jeanette Kinney,
Ashland: Carol Wikstrom, Med
ford; and Peggy MeCurley Jack
sonville. Two who attained 60-words-o-mintite
in the beginners
class are Ruth Weekes, Ashland
and Lois Wise, Klamath Falls.

plans were made to send Mrs.
Lester Thompson as a delegate
to the Rebekah Assembly of

Meeting Announced
For Sams Valley Unit
Sams Valley Sams Valley Ex
tension unit will meet Tuesday,
May 20, at the home of Mrs. J. C.
Duggan at 10:30 a.m.
A demonstration on "Buttons,
Belts and Buckles" will be given
by the hostess and Mrs. C. W.
Duggan. Members are asked to
bring scissors, needles, thimble,
thread, pins, ruler or tape, scraps
of material and soft cord.
A potluck luncheon will be
served and table service will be
required.
Installation of officers will
take place during the afternoon.
