HST Raps Critics

Promises Campaign
Washington (U.R) Presi
dent Truman ripped into critics
of Democratic farm policies in
bristling "whistle stop" form
Thursday, and pledged a person
al, extensive campaign for the
19 5 2 Democratic presidential
candidate.
Mr. Truman denounced as
"plain bunk and hokum" the
charge that his farm program
is socialistic.
Interpolating freely in an ad
dress honoring outstanding em
ployees of the Agriculture De
partment, the chief executive:
" Promise! To Campaign
1. Promised to campaign as ex
tensively for the Democratic
candidate in 1952 as he did for
himself in 1948 when he covered
nearly 32,000 miles in his "give-
em-hell fight to victory.
2. Forecast a Democratic vic
tory this year of at least the pro
portions of his success in ihih.
3. Announced his own inten
tion to go back to the farm when
he leaves office. Mr. Truman
owns a farm at Grandview, Mo,
4. Stated that 87 per cent of
the nation's press is attempting
to discredit the administration."
9. Warned that the nation will
face "disaster" if it does not
maintain its role of world lead
ership.
Former Josephine County
District Attorney Dies
Grants Pass (U.R) W. T,
Tom Miller, 72, former Jose
phine county district attorney,
died here Wednesday night. Mil
ler was a member, of the state
Legislature in 1935.

The twelve acts which will be
featured in Saturday's Boy Scout
circus have been prepared under
the direction of 26 local volun
teer adult Scout workers, it was
reported today by Dr. Charles
W. Lemery, circus chairman.
Ray Frisbie, production manager,
has been assisting Dr. Lemery
with circus plans.

Members Plan Joint
Sessions; Gifts Told
Several Jackson County His
torical society members plan to
attend a joint meeting with the
Siskiyou County Historical so
ciety at Yreka, Calif., on Sat
urday, May 17, and a meeting of
the Shasta County society on
May 24, society officers here said
today.
At a meeting of the Jackson
county society Tuesday evening,
numerous objects recently loan
ed or given to the Jacksonville
Museum were listed .by Mrs.
Myrtle P. Lee, curator.
Collection Described
One of the largest collections
came from a daughter of David
and Mary Johns Mrs. Stella
Stratton. The objects were from
the old Johns home at Williams,
Ore., and include a quilt, a coun
terpane, tintypes, Bible, photo
graphs of Mr. and Mrs. Johns
and the old Kerby, Ore., store;
a candle snuffer, trimmer and
candle molds; scales and ink well.
Two pieces of crystal taken from
the Oregon caves in 1877 by
Mrs. Johns' daughter by a pre
vious marriage, Eudora Godrey
Howard, also is a part of that
collection. The crystal was ob
tained by her on the first trip
into the caves after their dis
covery in 1878.
Other recent contributions to
the Museum are an old knife
blade of copper found by Edward
J. Garrett in his garden near
the site of an old railroad sec
tion house in Rogue River. J.
Percy Wells of Ashland has pre
sented pictures of his father and
mother who came west by cover

Horseshoe in Tree
A horseshoe found in the heart
of a tree near Glendale, Ore.,
is from C. J. Solenberger, Eagle
Point. From the rings of the tree
it appears the shoe was placed
there about 100 years ago. An
enamel dish pan purchased In
1882 and in constant use since,
without need of mending by the
Eifort family in Medford. is an
other recent item aded to Jacksonville-Museum
exhibits.
Other contributions are two
fruit jars dated 1858 from Ben
ton A. Boyce, Tolo, Ore., and a
hand-carved comb and brush
rack brought from Ashland.
Twelve Scouting Circus Acts Led By 26 Volunteers

Given Medford Men
Ten Medford residents are
among 192 Oregon apprentices
who have received certificates
of completion during the first
four months of this year, it was
announced today by the state
bureau of labor.
They are Norman E. Gam-
miere, Harvey J. Phillips and
Keith Margott, Clarence S. Mink,
carpenters; Malcolm J. Olsen",
clock and watch maker; Jack
L. Copley, neon sign maker;
Donald H. Nimrod, pressman;
Donald M. Rabor, packing house
operator; Jack W. Royce, office
appliance repairman, and Rich
ard K. Divert, mill and cabinet
maker.
The new graduates have been
given journeymen status after
completing on-the-job training
periods ranging from two to six
years.
DRIVER EXAMINER
Eagla Point A state driver's
license examiner will be at the
Shady Cove Veteran's hall from
9 a. m. to 4 p.m. May 19, it was
announced today. Those wishing
licenses and permits to drive are
asked to make an appointment
with the examiner early in the
day.

stadium starting at 8 p.m. Sat
urday, will be the largest gather
ing of scouts ever held in this

1,000 In Grand Entry
Don Newbury and Vic Milnes
have charge of the Grand Entry,
with more than 1,000 Cubs,
Scouts, and Explorers taking
part. Twelve Scouts represent
ing foreign countries will depict
the theme of the circus. Troop
9 of Medford will demonstrate
a precision bicycle drill under
direction' of Dr. W. H. Roberts
and Shcrrill Doty.
The "Cub Scout World" will
be a demonstration of all kinds
of Cub activities with some 300
Cubs taking part at one time
under the direction of Dick
Mann, Jim Hobbs, E. Arthur
and Clair Young. The Scout
games showing "Unity in Fun
one directed by L. C. McLough-
lin and Bob Hinman. The Scout
Olympics, with Roman chariots
and wall scaling, is directed by
Walt Young and Mel Scott.
"Noah's Ark, with its hun
dreds of animals, will be one of
the highlights of the entire cir
cus-when all the Cub Scouts
come pouring out of the Ark be
fore your eyes," according to
R. D. Church and Ken Fykerude,
act directors.
A demonstration of Scout
training will come in the first
aid act, "Be Prepared in This
Changing World," directed by
Drs. Richard Sleetcr, Rheinhold
Kanzler and Jack Ingram.
" The clowns will be every
where at any time and promise
to keep people interested and
entertained. Bob Walker and C.
"Red" Stothers are directing.
The rope and timber act, di
rected by Sam Taylor and Bob
Vincent, is one where only rope
and logs are used to construct
towers over 25 feet high, bridges
to hold over a ton of Boy Scouts
and primitive shelters of the out
of doors, all within 10 minutes
time.
World Jamboree Theme
The World Jamboree theme
of "Camping-Brothers under the
Skin" will show Scouts erecting
camps in a few minutes, and the
International Campfire' with an
authentic Indian dance by the
Order of the Arrow Explorer
Scouts. John Eddy and Harry
Bryant are directing the camp
ing act and N. H. "Duke" Glad
felter is in charge of the Indian
dance. .
The final act, "World United,"
will again feature all the Cubs,
Scouts and Explorers with the
Scouts from the foreign coun
tries. Ray Johnson and Jennings
Pierce are directing this act.
Some 2,500 spectators art ex
pected to attend tne Scout circus
this year.
