To Locate Sister
Kokomo, Ind. (U.R) Louis
Keppert of Winnebago, Wis.,
asked the police department to
help him find a younger sister
who had not communicated with
him in 10 years.
Keppert told Police Chief Don
Scott he learned his sister now
was living in Kokomo. He en
closed a photograph which Scott
sent to the local newspaper.
Patrolman James Patterson,
one of Scott's men, saw the
picture in Wednesday's edition
and said: "Why, that's my wife
he's looking for."

Phoenix Phoenix Grange No
779, with over 200 members,
went on record at Tuesday
night's meeting as protesting the

The unanimous vote of the

which indicated "amazement that
the Medford council would con

contrary to the ruling of Gov
Douglas McKay, and contrary to
the wishes of the majority of
Jackson county voters as express

Old Southern
Pushes. Principles of GOP
Yadkinville, N. C U.R)
As
far as state politics go, the
tanchly Republican newspaper
The Yadkinville Ripple has been
just what its name implies.
The fact, however, has failed
to dampen the ardor of the
dauntless weekly, published for
60 years in the heart of the
Democratic South.
Its editor, Ed Rutledge, has
uided the Old Guard policies
f The Ripple since 1909. He
followed a lawyer and a minis
ter, a rural mail carrier and the
wife of a Baptist minister as
head of the paper.
Fire Ktpt Burning
The minister's wife, Mrs. Mat-
tie Johnson Hall, started the
weekly in 1892 in nearby East
Bend. Local historians are foggy
on the exact reasons for Mrs.
Hall's deviation from her nor
mal pursuits of helping with
church suppers and the ladies'
aid society to become a publish
er. They are sure of one thing.
She started an unquenchable fire
burning for the policies of the
Republican Party.
During the paper s life, the
fire has continued to burn brisk
ly with one two-edition excep
tion. The mail-carrier editor, H.
B. Nelson, once took a two-week
vacation and left the weekly un
der the direction of a local Dem
ocrat. Both editions surprised lo
cal readers by blowing a mighty
blast of Democratic music.

July Bonus Checks
To State Vets Will
Total 27,170.000
Salem U.P.) Oregon bonus
checks totaling some $27,170 -
000 will, be paid to more than
65,000 veterans of World War II
or their next of kin during July,
Bonus Supervisor Hub Saalfeld
has estimated. .
That was the number and
amount of bonus claims which
the "veterans department esti
mates will be approved by July
1, the date when bonus pay
ments will start. Saalfeld said
all veterans whose applications
have been approved by that date
will receive their bonus pay
ments in July.
Approvals Not Told
Veterans are not being notified
that their claims have been ap
proved. Only those veterans
whose applications are disap
proved will be so informed. Less
than 400 letters of disallowal
have been issued to date.
More than 80,000 veterans
have applied for the bonus so
far. The department estimates
another 60,000 or so will file
before the deadline next Decem
ber 1.
Hearing on Copco
Appl
ication, Order
Slated June 30th
A hearing on the California
Oregon Power company's appli
cation for a license for a hydro
electric project on the Klamath
river will be held in Klamath
Falls on June 30 by representa
tives of the Federal Power Com
mission, it was learned here to
day. The application was filed with
the FPC on April 19, 1951.
In another proceeding to be
held at the same time, the FPC
has ordered the company to show
cause why it should not file an
application for a license on exist
ing developments along the
Klamath river in California and
Oregon, including power plants
at upper Klamath lake.
The company had requested
that hearings on the two matters
be consolidated, and the FPC
set the joint hearing at 10 a.m.
June 30 in the Klamath armory.

Newspaper
than - half - a - century of The Rip
ple's existence have been true to
its self-chosen designation, "the
organ of the Republican Party in
Yadkin county."
The weekly's present editor
publisher, with more than 40
years at its desk, has the fourth
longest record of state newsmen
in point of service with one pa
per. Now the veteran Rutledge
is allowing his son Bill to take
over the position.
As for The Ripple's GOP poli
tics, Rutledge admits they don't
make much "splash around such
present-day Democratic strong
points as the state capital, Ra
leigh, or in Washington. He said
1952 is an election year, how
ever, and The Ripple may yet
become a full-grown wave.

you can swing it if you really
